Well, one of my computers went down due to a blown power supply. I bought a new power supply, installed it and everything is running fine now BUT I cannot complete the jobs on time by the due dates, due to over a week of my computer being down.
----------------------------------------My question is, "Should I abort some jobs in order to be able to complete the jobs when due?" [Edit 1 times, last edit by Pink Moose at Dec 25, 2010 5:36:14 AM] |

That's really your call. BOINC will take care of anything that is overdue and not yet started by aborting those tasks itself. Ones that have already started will run until they have finished unless you abort them yourself.
----------------------------------------If it looks like they will finish close to the deadline even if late, the server will probably accept them and they will benefit the scientists. A lot of it has to do with which projects you are running. Most of the projects will simply issue another work unit once yours abort or time out. Some projects, like CMD, won't re-issue if they have enough to validate. These I would suggest completing the work unless it's going to be more than a couple days late. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

if you haven't start them then go ahead and abort them. Once the deadline is reached the server will send out the WU again to others (as a repair job), so if you start working on them and not finish them before the deadline, it may mean a waste of CPU time, since someone maybe working on it too.
----------------------------------------Note: If you finish your WU before the person who receives the repair WU starts working on it, then the server maybe able to cancel it before they start it. Also, if you haven't start the WU before the deadline, boinc may abort the job, depending on the version you have. ![]() |

Thank you both for your feed back. What jobs I have running that are almost completed, I'll keep running until completed and I'll abort 1 day worth of jobs and take it from there. I am running an i7CPU so I'm running 8 jobs at a time and this is why I am very concerned with "job due dates".
Well, you all have a great Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. |

Let them run, the server will abort as needed. when it is reissued, you will get an abort if you have not yet started, if not aborted when you return the reissue will be aborted it it has not yet started. if both yours and the reissue are started and returned, it is accepted as additional validation.
aborting will mess with your reliabity rating. |

Thank you for the information about the effect that aborting may have on my "reliability rating". That may be a very important fact to consider before aborting any jobs.
I wasn't able to complete several jobs by the deadline due dates but I was still given credit for the work so WCG obviously used those jobs. All my other jobs are okay now and I'll easily complete them before the deadline due dates. Again, thank you all for the "sound" advice you have ALL given me. |
