Thanks for the understanding but still kicking my own backside over this. I should have known it couldn't be that low. Right now at 4634MHz(1.325Vcore) on WCG drawing (looks carefully) 212W. I did manage a SuperPi 1M run at 5088MHz(1.525Vcore, don't do that!) and then tried the WCG bench at 5038MHz and got 4789/15920 with Hyperthreading enabled. Now that did impress the living heck* out of me! ![]() *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT Lady, I don't know what your problem is but to be very blunt I'm sick and tired of your editing my posts The word I used in that sentence is not vulgar, crude or profane in any way. If it is in your world then I suggest you get out of the house and see what the real world is like. I don't beleive in threats but the next time you edit one of my posts like this I'm gone. ![]() |

So I went to AMD/INTEL benchmark site,
----------------------------------------http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html I was astounded at the numbers the 2600K put out! The 2600K is a four core and it was only 100 points behind a I7 970 which is a 6 core. When your talking a score of 9900, 100 points is quite small. The only thing is it's around $500 for the 2600K and a new motherboard. Still cheaper than the $900 for a I7 970. Still like you say Movieman, I'm thinking of waiting for the sandy bridge xeon and get 2 cpus in one box. ![]() |

Jack, you forgot the i7-970 mobo costs money too.

It only has one socket. Are you hearing anything that EVGA might come out with a dual socket like the SR-2? I don't think these SB chips have dual QPI so I doubt thats possible. Next dualie should be socket 2011 this fall. Interesting note: My dual Supermicro X8DA3 with a PAIR of X5672's in it( 3200MHz quads) makes app 60,000WCG PPD while taking app 330w The SB system is showing app 41,500PPD while taking 212w. 2/3'rds the output for 2/3'rds the electrical draw BUT at a much lower initial cost and the dualie systems have shown to be the most electrically efficient up to now. These SB systems IMHO are the best choice right now for anyone considering a dedicated cruncher when elec and initial cost are taken into account. Never thought I'd say a single would be better than a dualie but I can't argue the numbers I'm seeing. The key is you have to get the 2600K chip, a good board, top HS and good fans. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Jan 18, 2011 5:07:43 PM] |

Jack, you forgot the i7-970 mobo costs money too. Yep I did, I was thinking I already have the 1366 mobo so I wouldnt have to replace that. But then I'm not the only one here am I ![]() P.S. Maybe when the 2011 comes out with an 8 core, the 1366 6 cores might drop into reasonableness... not betting on it... ![]() |

So as I understand this:
----------------------------------------It's better to get (3) i7-2600's than (2) i7-980x's Both in total output and power usage. Or am I mistaken... ![]() edit:changed then to than ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by PecosRiverM at Jan 21, 2011 7:06:14 PM] |

Or am I mistaken... ![]() edit:changed then to than Yea, I'd have to say thats the smart play. Heat dump is also a factor if you live in a hot climate. Much less from the Sandy Bridge quads. For dedicated crunchers just with the price differential( $330 for 2600K SB vs $app $1000 for a 980x) looking at output and electrical draw I can't see why one would go for the 980x UNLESS one wants max output and is limited on space for the systems ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Jan 22, 2011 12:40:02 AM] |

Between July and Sept, 6 and 8 core (12/16 thread) SB's will be released for high end desktops (skt unknown) and 2P servers (LGA2011). The 4P versions will be out in Q4.
So, IF I had a high end CPU (i7-980x), especially 2 in a dual skt setup, I would be inclined to wait until then, but if I needed a new system, I would just go for an SB now. It's still possible that skt 1366 systems could upgrade to an 8core/16thread CPU. Intel would get some serious bad press if something did not turn up for existing 1366skt boards. |

An 8 core 1366 westmere would be nice. Not sure why intel has such a low cost on SB than the previous version. No one in there right mind would buy anything else but SB chips. I just hope the xeon equivalent to SB dent cost a whole lot more. I prefer a dually set up.
