Re: New machine for the project...Sandy Bridge

While some 1P server processors come out in Jan/Q1 [4 (8)], it looks like Q3 for 2P (dual skt) [Sandy Bridge-EN and EP], and Q4 for 4P (quad skt - skt R) [Sandy Bridge-EX], but some of these will be 8 core (16 thread). Crunchers will also have to wait until Q3 for a 16thread LGA 1356 Sandy Bridge.
So Q3 will bring some single skt desktop PC's Bronze in 21h, Silver inside 3days, and gold within 6days.
Blue to a quad server is < 12days, or 10years within 2months. raised eyebrow
good luck

Re: New machine for the project...Sandy Bridge

I was a bit surprised that their overall Sandy Bridge system power usage [164W] was only 10% less than the i7-950 [181W], and slightly more than the Q9550 [161W]. However, going by SiSoft’s Whetstone and Dhrystone ratings it is about 30% faster than the i7-950. This would make it 33% more efficient on a performance per Watt basis, but we will have to wait for someone to post real numbers here to know for sure.
So while I would not rush out to replace my i7 with an i7-2600K just to crunch with, I would no longer even consider a new i7-900 series CPU. Pity the review did not compare it to an i7-800 series CPU, which we know are more energy efficient. Might have brought price into it.
While this CPU brings some goodies such as Quick Sync, it’s really a laptop CPU in a wolfs coat,
“Power users spending an extra $20 on a K-series chip also buy discrete graphics. Period... The H67 chipset needed to utilize on-die graphics doesn't support processor overclocking, so there's really no reason for a K-series/H67 combination.”
If you want to OC it, you need a separate GPU! So why buy a K-series model?
Well it’s a fair bit cheaper than an i7-970, and might come close to matching it for performance, especially if you get a P67 chipset board :) Just don’t buy it for the 12shaders ;P
Beyond the chipset limitations the other shortcomings are lack of OpenCL support, no DX11 support and no HD Graphics 3000 for more basic desktops; non-K series versions - It really is like they just got that one the wrong way round.

Re: New machine for the project...Sandy Bridge

So CES has started the cat's out of the bag movieman,
How'd it do?

It's a beast! biggrin
I had some issues with the first two prerelease boards I had but now on a retail Intel Burrage board and have tested up to 5088MHz so far and machine has been on WCG the past 12 hours at 4500MHz claiming app 51,684PPD while showing a draw on my kill-a-watt of 120.6W
That is really incredible to see. laughing Temps running in the mid 50'sC at 100% load on air.
Now for any that are comtemplating this build the keys are get the top 2600K cpu and get GOOD cooling.
Those stock HS just aren't up to handling the heat loads when you OC these chips.
Build specs:
Intel Burrage board
Intel2600K cpu
ThermalRight UltraExtreme 120 HS
113cfm Delta 120x25mm fan
2x4 gig GSKill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 memory
EVGA 260GTX vid
36 gig WD Raptor
PCP+C 610w Silencer PSU
Now you should be able to improve on my wattage draw with by replacing the vid card( for a dedicated cruncher) with an old 2-4mb PCI vid card that you can buy for $5.00 off ebay or steal out of an old machine that you've stuck in a closet 5 years ago.
There are also more efficient PSU's available today,I just "trust" these old PCP+C units as they've proven themselves over time to me.
Last, here's the app WCG benchmark from memory:
4450/14,500 with HT turned on running 8 threads.
Really impressive numbers!
Oh, did I say I was easily able to run this up to almost 5100MHz in 5 mins of adjustment? biggrin
For any that don't want to overclock( I can't understand why) these will easily run at 4GHz on stock voltage and make well over 35,000PPD
So, your not in your cars yet headed to the store? tongue

Re: New machine for the project...Sandy Bridge

There are those timesin life when one says "How the bleep did I miss that" and today was one of them.
Here's I've been watching my kill a watt that sits on the floor 3 ft away and thinking it was on the watts setting while the reality is it was on the volts setting.
Watts draw at 100% load is not the puny 120w I thought but at a highly overlcocked 4500+MHz isapp 212W..
At default 3500MHzthe draw at 100% load is 193W
My apologies for the false info.

Re: New machine for the project...Sandy Bridge

Thanks for the understanding but still kicking my own backside over this.
I should have known it couldn't be that low.
Right now at 4634MHz(1.325Vcore) on WCG drawing (looks carefully) 212W. I did manage a SuperPi 1M run at 5088MHz(1.525Vcore, don't do that!) and then tried the WCG bench at 5038MHz and got 4789/15920 with Hyperthreading enabled.
Now that did impress the living heck* out of me! biggrin
