It's a good thing that the points are meaningless. If they had value and you could actually do something with them and crunchers were getting extra points, some crunchers might get angry and do something outrageous like complain, or call the CAs and techs bad names, or even stomp their feet, like real loudly. crying Yes, but it's good to point out inefficiency. Some people care about points and they have been guided to the wrong OS. It's a valid complaint that seems almost trivial to correct. Of course points, badges, etc could be removed completely. You could then determine if they make a difference. |

I expect that many of the crunchers would be less generous with their spare computing power for WCG and move on to other services / projects that did show a "reward" for contributing. Patrick ![]() |

Anything that increases enthusiasm for distributed computing like WCG is worthwhile. There is no need for an austere puritanism.I will avoid commenting on points since the real rule seems to be to slowly respond to whatever the current criticism is in order to avoid loud criticism. Whatever the point system is changed to will not avoid some sort of criticism so it will always be changed later. At least, that is how it has come to seem to me. It used to be that the Linux compilers were uncompetitive with the Windows compiler. That changed with the new Linux 64-bit compiler, which crushed the Windows compilers. Now the Windows compilers are improving to try to match Linux. Nice to see some compiler progress. That helps everybody. Lawrence |

It's a really good thing that working to develop solutions for Aids, Cancer and Muscilar Dystrophy hinge on worthless badges.I like badges as recognition for my effort, but you just cannot equate finding a cure with 'no cash equivalent' digital jpegs. |

hope the new credit system fixes the following problem

Looks like you have been short changed with that task. Might be some systemic error that will be resolved when the servers are updated to the new Boinc Server version, next year.
----------------------------------------I just checked my systems and the majority get slightly less points for tasks (about 9 out of 10 get less credit than other systems). While most are average dual core systems 3 are reasonable quads. Perhaps they are losing out as they are x64, run faster but get fewer points. The fundamental thing that bugs me about the present points system is that crunchers try hard to optimize and when they logically base their efforts on the points system, it undermines their efforts. Even those that work out/found out the hard way that they need to look at like for like tasks, struggle with project variation and regular changes. Perhaps in a couple of months crunchers will be able to optimize more accurately. [Edit 2 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 22, 2010 6:05:23 PM] |
