confused Crunchers big boy toys, normal CPU or server?

Just for fun, I want to know for the mega crunchers here, you have a lot of normal CPU running around or actually a serve machine?

I'm sure that some of the mega crunchers here is an IT guy with a partner company (company that want to contribute into WCG). Am I right?

Last but not least, should I receive a windfall next year, which one is better, buy a lot of CPUs, but a lot of CPUs with dual cpu motherboard, or buy rackmount server?

Is it a good idea to buy this:

http://www.cray.com/Products/XE/Specifications.aspx

To run BOINC just for the fun of it, just because I can, or the money better spent in other way to help WCP more?

Just asking :-)

That system would probably be out of your reach unless you won the lottery. Myself, I build my own. I have 3 dual socket xeon systems. See my sig below. Can't over clock them though. Some like single processor systems, some like more. I think it's easier to maintain less machines but have more cores. Someone over at extremesystems has a 4 processor, 12 core AMD per processor running now. 48 cores in 1 box. I believe he said the cost was around 5 grand. My latest build was my westmere box. Around 2500 bucks. Just got to do your homework and shop wise.

Just buy a GPU. No-one should spend £800 on a CPU when a GPU that costs less than half that can do 10 or 20 times the work.

Since WCG doesn't support GPU crunching at this time what good would that do?

Re: Crunchers big boy toys, normal CPU or server?

Guys... guys... keep the GPU vs CPU on related thread, okay :-)

Anyway, I'm just asking this question just for fun. As for seriousness, I'm starting a simple/small 3d animation business next year, and looking for render farm. While I know there is a lot of online render farm, I have a reason on why I choose this route.

GPU vs CPU when it come to rendering:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bITAdWvMXE&feature=player_embedded

Actually it also contain a hints on why a lot of research doesn't support GPU yet.

I might buy this one by one as the need arise:

http://www.boxxtech.com/products/renderPRO/pro_overview.asp

Or depend on the situation, I might be buying this:

http://www.boxxtech.com/products/ROW/row_overview.asp

As for the original question, I'm just asking for the fun of it :-)

The WCG is not the only project doing good biomedical research. So it could do a lot of good.

Rendering largely depends on the amount you want to render, the time you have, the quality you want and the software you are using (as this limits capabilities).
Have a look at this in 720, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6jGQStEhgo

Re: Crunchers big boy toys, normal CPU or server?

fablefox, there is no CPU vs GPU. Both are complementary. It is CPU and GPU.
So if you do install a render farm that have cpus and gpus you can use both to crunch at the same time on WCG and another GPU project like GPUGrid or Seti if you are interested in finding the little green man etc. etc. smile

It's great your looking at crunching with your render farm when not in use. I took a look at your links. Looks pretty good. Not sure if you have to be on windows platform but Mac pros are strong computers comparable in price of what your looking at. Never heard of them before so support should be a consideration. Anyways, good luck with your render farm and glad to see you crunching. It's worth it.

Re: Crunchers big boy toys, normal CPU or server?

@skgiven

I know what GPU alone capable of, http://www.studiogpu.com is in the plan too. If I choose that route, I'm looking into this:
http://www.workstationspecialist.com/product_range/wsx218-tesla/specification/

But I have to wait for version 2.0 to come out, as version 1.0 doesn't even support SLI yet (can only use one card).

@Bearcat

Yeah, I know BOXX is not IBM, HP or CRAY, but in the 3d industry they're quite popular, specially among small to mid size studios, which you can notice based on their products - specially that shoebox connect-as-you-go renderfarm :-)

I already have an account at their website, and I can select Linux as the OS - which is good for stability, besides, both of my main app - MODO & Houdini, has Linux version. Houdini has unlimited renderfarm license, and MODO, if I'm not wrong, 50?

Anyway, I hope my plan goes well in 2011.

If there is any Malaysia here, see you at http://www.facebook.com/kre8tifconference.

I hope I can find some partner/publisher/funding there :-)

If you care to build it yourself and have 4 gpu's capability, here is the board...
