I've had a couple of these clean energy project phase 2 workpackets come down to my laptop, but they all seem to hang shortly after they start and go nowhere. I updated the BOINC software to the latest available as of today, and updated the preference about keeping work in memory even if not active in case that was causing the hanging condition, but so far these packets are not getting anywhere on my computer. Happen to be running on Windows 7 on a HQ dv7 laptop in case that information helps anyone figure this one out. Worst case I can take the clean energy project off my profile and run everything else (which is doing fine right now), but I would like to figure out if maybe it's just a preference issue or some other flag someplace that just isn't set right that is hanging things up.

rbotterb, it is pretty normal. when a CEP2 WU first gets started it will take a while for it to start up. Depending on the system it can be a few mins to several.
----------------------------------------If it takes too long (10 or 20 mins), then my guess is that it had some sort of problem starting up. If you have boinc version 6.xxx, you can click on the properties of the WU to see what is going on. ![]() |

Currently have one running on my laptop and its been hanging now for 6+ hours. Which WU settings should I be looking at that will tell me what is causing thsi workload to hang?

Hi,
----------------------------------------Is it hanging with the "Running" label in the status column or some other e.g. "Waiting for Memory"? The message log may also reveal what's going on. Plz copy post last 20 lines into a reply and also copy the first 30 lines from the start as then we can see the effective system setup. The BOINC software is the least suspect and it's only a manager/scheduler. The BOINC worker app comes from WCG and is updated automatically when a revision has been released. ttyl

You'll note I've now having to suspend my computation at times since the new BOINC is running 8 packets at the same time instead of the four previously and seems to be running my laptop hot enough that its kicking on my fans inside continuously. I got to get this all under control soon or I'll just pull the plug on this whole deal.

rbotterb,
----------------------------------------You've not answered all of the questions in my post. Please revisit and fill in what the Tasks Tab, Status column reports for the CEP2 task or any other task. Two things to do for you: 1. Go into the Local Prefs (BOINC Manager Advanced Menu) and set the "Leave Application in Memory when Suspended" to Yes. 2. The 11/17/2010 5:02:52 AM suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 % field is best set to 0 (zero). ** You have not posted an actual piece of the log while the client is in operation for a little bit. If "Run Based on Preferences" is active it could be that your client is constantly pausing. You best do NOT run 8 CEP2 jobs simultaneous. You are already and recommend to run a mix as on some systems 8 concurrent Energy jobs can cause massive disk IO. Also, 4GB Disk use is small... 8 cores I7 best are run with default 10GB allowed. Also suggest to increase the 11/17/2010 5:02:37 AM max memory usage when idle: 3680.93 value to 90% as the more memory allowed while system is not being used, the more efficient the sciences can run. And for "I got to get this all under control soon or I'll just pull the plug on this whole deal.", no stamping feet please. We're trying to help you and that takes some Q&A time to find out what you want and what you're doing. If you want to run less processes simultaneous open the local preferences and go to the Processor tab and down below there is "On Multi Processor Systems..." 50% in an I7 will run 4 job instead of 8, 75% will run 6. If sytem runs hot, set the the "use at most xx %" to for instance 50%. Then BOINC will run in 1 second on / off cycles. Better for Windows is though to get the TThrottle utility. Then you can set a desired maximum temperature and the utility will them slow BOINC down if the temps go above, but that for later. Of course you have to set in the Activity menu "Run based on preferences" as else BOINC will run full out. ttyl. ** If you wish BOINC to pause when the using the system yourself, then suggest the option be increased to 50%, and again set the "Run Based on Preferences".

I recently adjusted the preferences on the CPU to 50%. Previous BOINC was set to 4 and it was honoring that. The new BOINC looks to be tied to the CPU metric, so I've adjusted that and pulled back a bit on the memory numbers and the laptop is running better now. I'll reset the memory suspended option back to yes and see how that goes. After I run for awhile I'll post my log again and if anyone sees other adjustments to make, I'll make those to the preferences as well.

Any ideas for additional adjustments in the profile will be appreciated, though if you want me to adjust something, an explanation of what that profile item is actually impacting would be helpful on my part as well. My laptop is running ok now and not too hot, but then I still have 8 workpackets on my system (nothing has trimmed down towards 4 yet), the one clean energy project workpacket is still just sitting there without movement past about 1.7% done and the other workpackets are running much slower than they were doing.
Anyway things are stable for now if slower, but I would appreciate any suggestions to get the clean energy project packet into computation mode. |
