i started with wcg 6 years ago. i saw an article in the local newspaper (Houston Chronicle) and thought the idea of letting my idle computer time be used for something would be a good thing. I think i installed the old program on three machines that day (making me one of the top crunchers). i saw the user forums and the teams thing, but didn't really think much about it. i would check back on my results each day (slightly OCD on things like this) and I kept seeing more and more teams being formed. i'm not a big team joiner, but after a couple of weeks i decided i would throw my crunching in with my home state team. it wasn't any big deal, it just gave me something else to look at each day as my rank rose and my Texas team climbed the list of teams.
----------------------------------------over the next few weeks i started noticing that certain teams were ahead of mine and when i checked the forums, a couple of them had threads for their teams. MOT's founder (the illustrious David Autumns) was especially big on posting and trying to get people to join his little group (i think he was the first one with a separate team web site). he was joined by two of the most prolific posters around (Graham and Dave Bell) in their enthusiasm for MOT. like i said, i'm not a team joiner and his "rah, rah, yeah team" attitude was way too much for me. I kept Team Texas going strong, but my interest was waning. i kept going to the team posts and MOT was always posting. Finally in May of 2005 i made the decision to join the other big hitters in MOT. I'm not sure if it was the offer of the free Porsche or the free beer for life that got me over the edge. in the past five and a half years, i have come to see the wisdom of teams. i feel like i've gotten to know so many people over the years. several have gone their separate ways (Graham, Largethunder, Compudude, and of course, Dave Bell), and while i have never met a member of MOT in person, i consider you my friends. over the years we have had our differences (i left for a while back in 2006) but the attraction of so many wonderful people joining together for a noble purpose was too much for me. I am proud to be part of the best team on the WCG. Happy Birthday, MOT!!! In Memory of Dave Bell |

I truly hope you make it in your dream career. Enjoy it while you can as there's a good chance your dream career will change in time. Always keep your options open. Wise advice, Keith. I certainly do agree with doing it all while its all fresh and I'm thirsty for knowledge, then perhaps later in life if I get bitten by the bug again I could always advance to a doctorate (certainly something I'd love to do someday). It's just getting the practical experience and obtaining the right connections to find my calling career and setting myself up there. In any case, its less than 10 days to go until I've completed all the exams for my undergraduate. Am exceptionally nervous about my operating systems unit as I've lost alot of interest in the programming/systems side of IT. But I've yet to fail a unit and not about to start on my final semester! i started with wcg 6 years ago. i saw an article in the local newspaper (Houston Chronicle) and thought the idea of letting my idle computer time be used for something would be a good thing. Six years. It's amazing how time goes. Six years ago I was in my final years of high school. I joined for reasons like most of yous. This team is comprised of great people who despite living on the opposite side of the world and of a completely different generation, I've still come to enjoy talking with. Perhaps one day I'll get to tour America and will try and actually meet some of yous. But until then, I shall keep at my usual lurking routine. Happy birthday MOT and WCG ![]() |
