Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Today, we begin our big membership drive to boost participation in CEP2 over the coming weeks. Let’s see how much we’ll be able to increase the donated computing time. We invite every supporter of CEP2 to join in and encourage new members to sign up for WCG and CEP2!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Good news. What is the nature of this membership drive? With the exception of DDDT2, other WCG projects seem to be in the range of 45-55 years/day and CEP2 is constant at about 14-15 years/day. Do you have a target range you are trying to acheive?

Cheers!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Certainly it's somewhat disappointing that even whilst having the "down to the single result exact caching", no upward movement has been observed... just trundling along at the 15 years/day mean.

Probably that drive should would have greater impact if it included a complete instruction how to man-handle the device profile for CEP2 to get optimal customized settings... my duo cache is now with an override set to 3 with a cache of 1 day, interlaced with the rest, initially manually held to get the spacing to prevent more than 50% of the cores running this app. The quad is set to 5 with reasonable spacing, so only 2 run at any one time, most of the time without my need for intervention.

PS: Don't want to hijack this science (b)log, so suggesting a thread specific to optimal settings with a chart of sorts for easy initial setting.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Just a quick comment?
I have a 6 core CPU and the most I ever see is one assignment at a time on this specific job. The other 5 cores crunch something else.

Is there any way I can change a setting or something can be done so that I can be assigned one assignment per core instead of one per machine at a time? That would greatly increase the throughput each day Id think.

Ha, case in point I was making, Yes, in the custom part of the device profile (My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile > xxxx > Custom radio button, if not already customized) you can set how many CEP2 tasks you would like to have on the device at any one time. The number can be set from a drop-down list in the range from 1 to 16.

edit: See the CEP2 forum "Sticky" post for more detail: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,30182

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Thank you SO much SekeRob. This project is a bit more confusing than some of the others with it's settings and it probably would have taken me a week to find that on my own IF I even did!!

FWIW I have two of my other machines crunching WCG now and set the biggun to use all 6 cores now for the Clean energy project. Hopefully this will help a bit with your numbers.

If ya ever got a CUDA app for this I could whup some butt fer ya!!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Roberto has produced a small clip on how to install CEP2. So, no more excuse that setting things up is too complicated biggrin.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Dear dataman, sekerob, and others,

Obviously we want to get as big a share as possible, but who knows what’s realistic. We are already happy with what we have right now, even if we had anticipated a bit more. Our goal really is to see how far we can push it, and we hope that we can make a significant kink into the result curve.

The drive is mostly focused on approaching different communities we have access to and encouraging them to participate. We also work on a few specials – like our tutorial videos.

Best

Your Harvard CEP team

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

P.S.: Again, we encourage all of you to support us in our drive - tell your family, friends, and colleagues about WCG and CEP2 and ask them to join in. It's an easy way to support scientific progress on important topics.

Thanks for the clarification. Hope to see some success from your efforts. peace
