Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We had our monthly phone call with our friends at IBM today and everything seems to be running smoothly. We are all particularly happy that the database launch a few days ago went so smoothly.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Very exciting with all the attention the CEP project has received (and is receiving)! You are also great at posting /very/ regular updates, wish other projects' scientists would follow your lead! Although the general situation on this point has improved greatly over the last year or so with webcasts, news updates etc...on the other hand many projects have also been ending lately.

Speaking of webcasts, will there be a webcast from the CEP team? Now that you are used to recording cameras and getting interview questions? :D

Also great that CEP is getting a larger share of CPU time now as many projects have been "finished" on WCG and many are intermittent.

Crunching on!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Dear flodisar,
thanks so much for your feedback - we greatly appreciate it. The outreach to our crunchers is very important to us and we are happy that it is well received. Yes, in fact Alan is supposed to give a webcast on the database sometimes in the near future - we'll keep everybody posted on the status of this.
Best wishes

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We currently have Casey from the Schrier Group at Haverford in town. He’s meeting with the team to learn about our experience with scientific database design and implementation. He’s a bright kid and it’s great having him over for a visit.

Dear CEP Team,
You're welcome! :) And it is nice to know that a webcast is on its way!

I have a pretty powerful PC, as described in my sig, but unfortunately my BOINC RAMDisk is only 4GB - free version software limitation...which only enables me to crunch three CEP WUs at a time or it complains on lack of storage :(, I will have to look into that. You have a neat document with tips and tricks for the BOINC settings, perhaps its contents shoudl be made a sticky thread here in the forums (if not already done)? Also, it could be interesting to add an "advanced" topic for more serious crunchers in that document for using a RAMDisk - it can handle many orders of magnitude of more I/O, does not wear out due to access/write operations like HDDs/SSDs and should also give a small boost to the crunching of CEP, especially with several running WUs at the same time.

Anyway, just some thoughts, keep up the excellent work and I will do my best to do my share of it - crunch those WUs! ;)

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Dear flodisar,
thanks for the suggestion - yes, sure, our friends at IBM could certainly make a sticky thread. About the expert settings: We haven't included those yet because we haven't ourselves been tinkering with them. But I'm thinking we could compile the best suggestions from the forum on our new webpage and add a comment thread for suggestions from our crunchers. I'll bring this up in our next website meeting and hope someone volunteers.
Best wishes

I suggest Primo Ramdisk. It is not free, but it avoids some stability problems of the free Dataram Ramdisk, which is very good when it works. But I had to re-install my OS a couple of weeks ago after uninstalling it, and then upgrading the AHCI drivers; it appears that something did not uninstall completely, and they did not get along well, but other factors could be involved and YMMV.

Alan is currently on a plane back from Korea where he presented our work on the Clean Energy Project. This project is truly a global effort which is met by interest around the world :).
