Can anyone help me set up a flash drive with BOINC on it so that I can run WCG on my work computer with out breaking co. rules to "not install software on company computers".
Any help will be appreciated. |

If I recall correctly, you would need to boot your OS off of the thumb drive to do it. Thus, you would have to change your BIOS on the work computer to boot off of these devices before the hard drive. Keep in mind that you would not have access to your work's resources while booted in this way. (or at least some of them depending on their setup and what apps you have installed) I do not believe BOINC currently has a portable version. If it does, I would be interested in this as well. I think Berkeley's stance on this is that they don't want a portable version so that people are forced to get permission to use any and all resources on systems that don't belong to them.

See link below for a Linux system that can be used from CD/flash drive etc.
----------------------------------------http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/Dotsch_UX.html Dotsch/UX - A USB/Diskless/Harddisk BOINC Ubuntu Linux Distribution I have been using this from CD with USB flash drive for storage and from HD on another PC. Search these or Dotsch forums for more info. Bear in mind you may still be breaking the rules, this system can read un-encrypted Windows disks and could be set to write. Keep an eye on CPU and system temperatures, especially on laptops.
Paul.

Maybe there isn't a portable version, but the following procedure woks almost the same:
----------------------------------------- install boinc on a pc; - stop the client; - copy it on a flash drive and copy it on the target machine - start boinc client on the target machine... It will run and it isn't officially installed either. HTH
