Running on netbooks

I just started running World Community Grid on an old netbook that is just used to watch video on an SDTV and otherwise sits unused. Right now it's running two WUs from Human Proteme Folding and they're 13 hours elapsed, 20 hours to go. They'll get done before it expires so it's at least worthwhile, but I was wondering if one of the projects were better suited to the underpowered processor (Atom N280 1.66 GHz).

Also, it's currently running two work units at a time (w/hyperthreading). Would it be better to force it to run only one?

Hello patches and welcome to the the forum.
HPF2 is rather resource intensive. You may do better with clean water on that machine. coffee

HCC (Help conquer Cancer) and HCMD2 (Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy and the mentioned C4CW have smaller footprints. HPF2 falls in the heavier class as do FightAIDS and Help Fight Childhood Cancer.

and yes I would turn HT off

No need to switch HT off... simply set the client to

"On Multi Processor system, use at most 50% of the processors"

and only 1 tasks will run at the time. The OS will take care what resource to use and you might even be able to watch video without need to stop crunching :D

Re: Running on netbooks

I have two Atom based netbooks. They both run 2 C4CW WUs 24x7. They do not thrash - there is enough memory nor do they overuse the disk. I see no reason to restrict them to a single task and can't understand why this advice is given. confused

Re: Running on netbooks

I'm glad to see this thread, as I'd been thinking about what were the best projects to run on my slow Atom-based mini-desktop. It has dual core Atom 330 and 2 GB memory, and runs under Ubuntu Linux 10.04. With hyperthreading on, it happily runs 4 C4CW WUs at a time, or any combination of 4 WUs from C4CW, HCC, and HCMD2.

I actually am steering away from HCMD2 on it now, however, as it never can complete a WU before the 6-hr cap, and I think that ends up making more crunching time for the "child" WUs.

It has successfully run the big footprint projects, as long as I babysit to make sure it doesn't try to do more than one big one at a time. It has even run some CEP2 WUs, but I don't do them on it anymore either because it doesn't get very far before the 12-hr cap.

It does great with DDDT2 C-type units, but I don't try to get those because they come interspersed with A-type and B-type, which are too lengthy for this machine.

I think I did a timing experiment running C4CW with HT on and with HT off. The WUs took less than twice as long with HT on, so I figured that was the more efficient way to go. C4CW was my best bet for that test since its WUs are of such consistent length.

I can't recall this machine ever having an error or invalid WU. And since it's low-power and doesn't generate too much heat, I could run it 24/7 all summer.

So I say more power to you, patches, for crunching with Atoms -- and C4CW and HCC are great choices of projects for them. But do finish those HPF2 units you're running -- they'll almost certainly finish and validate and make their contribution!

Re: Running on netbooks

I set up a device profile to limit the netbook to those three projects. One of the HPF WUs finished and a HCC WU started that presently has a shorter ETA than the other HPF WU.

When I have some time I'll experiment with whether it works better with HT on or off. What's the best way to go about this?

@kateiacy: I've never had heat troubles with the Atom machine, unlike my Core 2 Duo laptop which likes to run hot, but is usually okay if I make sure the laptop is positioned such that the bottom vent isn't blocked.

@RT: My netbook's HD has platters instead of flash so I don't have to worry about thrashing. tongue

@Sekerob: AFAICT it crunches just fine while VLC is playing video. Anything using Flash will stop it though.

Re: Running on netbooks

Since my laptop is slowly going... completely worn mouse pad, shaky power connector, battery no longer charging... will be looking soon for a replacement. What has an duo hyperthreaded CPU... I3 / i5 xxx ? an I5 750m or is the 520M maybe a better choice... lower power and comparible speed... maybe one that has this turbo function?

Re: Running on netbooks

Whatever you chose, look for 32nm parts.

Core i3

Core i5

Core i7

Turbo Boost won't probably help much. This feature turns on when some cores are idle and there's thermal headroom to overclock.

Sorry for an ignorant question, but would you say more about what is the advantage of 32 nm parts? Thanks!

And thanks for the informative links!
