System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

This is minor -- but--

I just upgraded to BOINC 6.10.58. The WCG Icon in the system tray no longer reports the correct "% completed" when I hover over it with my mouse. It seems to report the % completed as of the last time I opened BOINC Manager on my PC. Opening BOINC manager corrects the amount until I close it --then it doesn't change until next time I open BOINC Manager.

I've encountered this problem too, actually for quite some time. If I remember correctly, this "behaviour" started from version 6.6.X.

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

All lucky you, the 6.12 Pre Beta Tray Icon reports:

Computing is Enabled
Computing is Suspended - Time of Day

Network is Enabled
Network is Suspended - Time of Day

The "...Time of Day" is both for scheduled and fully suspended Computing or Networking.

On "Snooze" you get: Computing is suspended - User Request.

littlepleaks,

for the % in tray that has been gone for longer and am surprised it even shows. Is this a service/protected operation install or a regular user... BOINC only starting when signing in? Something to know so we can integrate that bit into the SysTray FAQ.

All subject to change by developers without notice!

Those who run BOINCTasks (BT) get a balloon that shows each device name in a LAN plus the number of tasks running. Now THAT I consider a useful piece of information... BT has been my longer standing multi-device BM replacement on my work machine, which is windows based.

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

My observation: The system tray shows the latest status you had in the boinc manager. And indeed, the issue has been there for quite some time.

It makes no sense the way it is implemented at the moment, IMHO. Either it should read the current status directly from the boinc process, or not display the status.

Regards,
Martin

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

martin64,

You don't fill in the answer to the question when seeing the percent, any percent: Is this a service or a standard, user only install? Mine is service / all user and not seen a percent for a very long time... probably as noted by moonian, since 6.6. Only when we have that pertinent information we can update the 'read only' FAQs. and then make sense out of this.

Is boinctray.exe running so to establish the full operating environment?

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

That's a relevant bit of info, the OS. BOINC was changed from 6.2.xx and boinctray.exe was added specifically for Vista and same applying to W7 to further sandbox BOINC.

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

Is this a service or a standard, user only install?

Ok, some more info:

- Windows XP
- Standard BOINC from the BOINC website
- BOINC comes up as a service, including tray icon, all users
- The issue was there since I installed BOINC again in May last year - but I don't remember which version that was exactly. I always had the latest "recommended version" installed.

Will check later whether boinctray.exe is running. And I am not sure whether the percentage is only shown when boinc manager has been started before - will check that.

Regards,
Martin

Re: System Tray not Reporting Correct % Completed

This boinctray.exe is not relevant to XP, only Vista, equivalent and up. It's a little service that detects the mouse / keyboard activity and passes that info to thecore client boinc.exe to know if it should/should not process tasks. It was created because of the new security model that Vista and higher operate under.

The tray icon only appears when the BOINC Manager is loaded. It's talking to the core client service via the localhost IP 127.0.0.1 using RPC. It's a long standing subject to FW/AV false detection and isgenerally advised to be given a scan exception (impacts performance too)
