I've been a member for a little while, (I've forgotten) and I keep seeing the points, but I've no clue what they do, or how they work! All the FAQ's talk about is how they're rewarded and such, so I'm a bit lost.
Or have I just missed what I was looking for? |

What do points do?....basically nothing!
All they do is mount up. |

Hi Darkingfire,
----------------------------------------welcome to the WCG forum. Just put a short FAQ together to explain them: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,30111 There are many more items in Help and the Start Here forum which have been linked in this FAQ, so if something remains unclear, let me know. They'll be with us for a little longer Thanks for donating spare CPU cycles to volunteer computational research. -- SekeRob

I suppose that this is still going on. Believe it or not, there were individuals and groups or teams of crunchers who used WCG to essentially race their computers, to see who had built the fastest rigs. The results of their work was based in the points awarded.

mitrichr, we live and breath WCG daily... yes we still do that and will do that, the fun side of grid computing... being able to measure if riding a Cinquecento or a Testarossa. My Volvos, greek for "rolling", are on cruise control... 24/7.
----------------------------------------Happy crunching

Just put a short FAQ together to explain them: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,30111 FAQ is read only, so I take this thread to suggest an improvement: FLOPS stands for Flating-Point Operations Per second In the context that 700 points equals 1 GFLOPS, it cannot be a per second thing, as the points only refer to the amount of work done, not the speed. I guess FLOPS stands for Floating point OPerationS, i.e. the number of operations needed to do the work worth e.g. 700 points. Regards, Martin ![]() |

You can find a myriad of what FLOPS stands for and I chose: http://www.acronymfinder.com/Floating_Point-O...r-Second-%28FLOPS%29.html
----------------------------------------Multiply by 86,400 seconds in a day and you get the daily number of operations. It's not even right as the points are a combination for FPOPS and IOPS **, the 2 parts that make up the benchmark. ** the internal BOINC code descriptors of the Whetstone and Dhrystone values.

Of course there may be thousands of definitions - however, it cannot be a definition "per second" in this case. I have seen people using FLOP for this, when they just count the number of operations, and FLOPS when they mean the throughput per second. So, for example, the WCG would be a 400+ TeraFLOPS engine, having done a couple of ExaFLOP since it was introduced.
----------------------------------------It's a similar debate like energy vs. power, or why kW/h is something totally different than what most people use it for. Regards, Martin ![]() |

Can only suggest you start going around the various wiki's and 'correct' the matter... beginning here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Computation_credit

but I've no clue what they do, Points have the purpose to have you addicted to crunching. Over time you need more and more points to reach the cruncher's nirvana. It can become very expensive like any addiction. Points are like casino tokens. They have value only in WCG and nowhere else. You can use them in Boinc but the exchange rate is very bad, better stay with WCG. You have also very nice and colourful tokens called badges. These are made of precious metals or gemstones. These are much more precious and cannot be traded somewhere else, they are exclusive to WCG. These badges are also made to multiply the addiction power. Compared to all existing addictions WCG is one of the best, I would even say that it would be strongly advised In short Crunch Crunch Crunch and sky is the limit. Just to have you motivated the badge here under is one that you can earn if you crunch a lot. Nice isn't it. ![]() ![]() |
