Hi Folks,
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with all the updates, BIONC 6.10.17. I have an i7 processor. I would like to set the "home" profile so that BIONC uses at most 75% of cpu time or 6 of the cores/threads, but not all 8 of the cores/threads. Bionc checks the website for it's settings ("home" profile" in this profile: In Basic options: Use no more than: 75% of processor time In Advanced options: Suspend work if CPU usage is above 75% of cpu and On multiprocessors, at most use: 3 processors (thinking I have 4 actual cores) On multiprocessors, use: 75% of processors (I've also tried 6 in: at t most use: 6 processors)(thinking total threads/cores is 8) Doesn't matter what I set all 8 threads are going full out on BOINC. In between setting the home profile, saving it and checking the outcome, I have rebooted the computer each time. What should I try next? -- Zoot |

1. The % of Processors = 75% of quad allows 3 cores (processors), on a Hyperthreaded quad, 6 of 8.
----------------------------------------2. The % of (Allowed) Processors' time = 75% is overall allowed cores, which the per 1 above results in 75% of BOINC allocated cores. Maybe the % of Processor time should have the "(Allowed)" inserted. The rules work "and and" and not "or or". The language of Processors is a bit ambiguous. A CPU, these days have multiple on board, so it's called here a Multiprocessor. The new "Suspend work if CPU usage is above 75 % of cpu" may add to the more misunderstanding as BOINC is ignorant in that 1 core used by NON-BOINC system activity at 75%+ is enough to let that one kick in for all of BOINC. The word "any" inserted before CPU, and call that a "processor" too would make that clear. The intend of the function is that if you're at the computer doing heavy stuff such as gaming, BOINC will suspend until you stop. Probably I've added confusion to the simple world of BOINC :P edit: Now to get the web device profile to kick in, go to the Advanced Menu > Preferences and hit the Clear button, then in the Projects tab select WCG and hit the Update button to transfer revised web prefs to client. It says at bottom at web prefs that they don't take effect until the client talks to the server... it really does.

To add to the "Suspend work...", if in your case the usage by non-BOINC processes is less than 75%, BOINC gets all spare cycles of the allowed cores. If higher than 75%, BOINC gets nothing.

Thanks Sekerob,
Took me several reads to understand your post, but that's me. I have a noisy fan when Boinc runs flat out and wanted to reduce the noise a bit. I'm looking at a better heat sink, but I don't know much about them and haven't found much yet. (I don't over-clock.) I don't know the facts about the standard fan the i7 comes with to compare them to. I will though :) Anyway thanks again. -- Zoot |

Zoot,
----------------------------------------The 75% of CPU time at the top of the web prefs is the one that will reduce the BOINC activity to running 3 seconds, pausing 1 second, which works as a thermal control. For windows I recommend TThrottle or ThreadMaster GUI. Former works to slow BOINC when it gets too hot. Latter works always and gives a real smooth running BOINC getting less cycles at millisecond control. If you've cleared the local prefs and your client talked to the server, things should now be working... provided you set the Activity menu option to "Run based on preferences"... you make no mention of that. PS, "Zoot Allures" is an album by the late Frank Zappa.

Before you buy one, you need to understand a lot. First if you have a Dell or other preassembled machine, you may not have room for one of the aftermarket coolers as they are generally bigger. Another thing that you may have to worry about is the mounting. I have had a problem with Dell MBs where I could not mount an after-market cooler...so I moved the Dell components to another case and then had to modify an aftermarket cooler to fit the Dell specific holes which was a bit of a mess. IFIRC it was a core2quad 9550 that I had the problem with. Good Luck. |

These are some great coolers if you have the room for them. Even for a little over clocking......
