I thought I would open this thread for those that want to discuss the “New and Improved” BOINC 6.11.x
----------------------------------------I put BOINC 6.11.8 on a machine today. Win7-64 bit, I7 920 upgraded from 6.10.58. There are quite a few changes. 1. It installed fine (I had BOINC shut down). 2. I went to click the messages tab and ... WHAT??? ... it's gone! I was not apparent just where it went. Now you now have to click on Advanced ==> Event Log (I guess Messages are now Events) and it opens in a separate window. Personally I think this is a nuisance not an improvement. 3. They rearranged the tasks tab. The order is now Project, Progress, Status, Elapsed, Remaining, Deadline, Application & Wu Name. 4. There is a new tab "Notices". Nothing is in it on the projects I am running on that machine. 5. When I did the install (Win7) it turned off LAIM and I had to turn it back on. 6. There are new “features” in computing preferences. I would advise you check out everything here after the install. What you “had” may not be what you “have”. 7. The high order tabs (File, View, Tools, Activity, Advanced, Help) had their contents shuffled around (e. g. Computer Preferences is now in Tools rather than Advanced) I have not seen any crunching problems but I am not really Beta testing it … just poking around. I've only run it for a few hours. What do you think of BOINC 6.11.x? ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Dec 23, 2010 3:06:23 AM] |

What do you think of BOINC 6.11.x? I think I'll let you work out all the bugs before I proceed. It's the old dog/new trick syndrome. ![]()

Not Beta, all versions of 6.11, those with the uneven minor sub are the sign of utter Alphaness. Run with it and report problems over at Berkeley, ideally the Berkeley Alpha mail list, here the link to the September discussions: http://lists.ssl.berkeley.edu/pipermail/boinc_dev/2010-September/thread.html.
----------------------------------------Main interface change is the removal of the Message tab which got moved into the Advanced menu as Event Log. New tab "Notices" has come in place and is a collection of important events which will generate pop-ups to draw attention to something to know or deal with. 6.12 the first quasi pre-Beta is supposedly some weeks away.

What goes in there is supposed to be used with restrained, else you'll be constantly seeing these pop-ups. Hope that can be disabled, at the minimum do not expect them to show when the BM is not loaded. The format is in RSS feed format, so who knows can you soon follow it via your web browser... with the importants from the project and from the client, but if Dr.Anderson starts prompting from there, the Set and Forget could turn into Set and Get Irritated to the point of uninstalling :O

Thanks!

After using 6.11.8 for a day, I must say that I find having to open messages in a separate window is exceedingly annoying! From a crunchers point of view, I still don't understand what problem this resolved or what benefit it added. Although there are some problems in 6.10.58 I am going to stay with it for now.
----------------------------------------I would like to hear what other people think. You can always post your comments at the Berkeley site. We are the ones that use the client, we are the ones that do the work and we should have input on how it works. Ok, that's the end of my morning rant. Cheers! ![]() EDIT: To remove mis-information. ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Dataman at Sep 30, 2010 5:34:57 PM] |

Where's did you read about that abandonment? WCG skinned (momentarily with P4SP) is on the WCG download page and the web device profile has the added CPU control option added... can't be everywhere, so a link is much appreciated.
----------------------------------------I'm using the BM less and less, just a single BOINCTasks, multi device view. Few are happy about the tab removal, and with a default of only showing running/waiting to run tasks, that separate message window as pinned to the bottom half of the BM would have been nice with one window to manage. Many have voiced the discontent. Advanced View is Advanced... wanna not confuse, make it harder to get at the AV and stick the Simple View in, which anyhow is default for clean installs (and some key that needs deleting from the registry if you want the default back). edit: The news item is still up as is the member news items. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=141

Sorry I didn't read it properly. I do hope WCG sticks with 6.10.58. Sorry for the confusion. I will edit my post. Thanks for clarifying. ![]() ![]() |

Even I may have speculated about that at one time in public for WCG to skip 6.10, but effectively could not as those running WCG only cant still have some web options in the client and a client option on the website... now whose going to re-push to get that "idle mouse/keyboard detect to go to sleep" option ported into the client?
----------------------------------------At any rate, 6.11.9 ALPHA is out and the top line highlights what some may be experiencing (nauseating repeat I'm sure)... Set LAIM on in 6.10.37+ till when 6.12 is formally promoted :D Change log 6.11.9: # client: if we suspend apps because non-BOINC CPU is is too high, leave them in memory. Otherwise (if the CPU use is caused by launching an app, say by security software) we would get into a loop. # Mac: update release script to add new BOINC skin # client: if a process has priority <= that of BOINC apps, don't include it in non-BOINC CPU time. Otherwise the presence of such a process could prevent BOINC from running apps. (Windows only - will do Unix/Mac later) # client: in computing non-BOINC CPU time, ignore ACTIVE_TASKs that don't have a process. # client: bug fix to previous checkin # client (unix): don't count low-priority processes towards non-BOINC CPU time. NOTE: when you nice a process to 19, its priority in /proc is 39 (at least on Ubuntu and FC11). I can't find where this offset (20) is documented, so I just hardwired 39. TODO: Mac # lib: Temporary work-around for unknown problem with IPV6-compatible code on Mac # lib: make str_util.h C-compatible (from Matt Arsenault) # lib: Add test for low-priority processes to procinfo_setup() and relatives on Mac # lib: Fix problem with IPV6-compatible code on Mac
