Re: Lost over 8 hours of calculating time

"Leave application in memory while suspended" option should have been listed as a reqirement for this project.

Re: Lost over 8 hours of calculating time

Hibernating with either LAIM on or off should make no difference. It stores the in situ memory state to disk in the hiberfil.sys (windows). At least when I close the laptop lid or have a power out that tells the PC to shut down in standby/hibernation, the resume is from exactly the same point.

WCG has no control nor can check whether the research opt-inners do switch LAIM on or even do any form of RTFM. Considering such new features as the "While processor usage is less then xx percent" in the imminently adopted 6.10.58 would unload a CEP2 task without a blink of an eye when loads are exceeded (just learned the WCG web default will be 50%, not 25% as coded in the client), I've carried the suggestion forward to formalize the original *recommendation* in I think the Beta support forums by uplinger(?), to add as footnote 4, applicable to all supported platforms.

cheers.

Re: Lost over 8 hours of calculating time

I'll try the LAIM setting - thanks!

With LAIM off, I definitely lose process for a not reached checkpoint on CEP2.

Here's what BOIC adds to the message log when I hibernate and turn my computer back on from hibernation:

25/09/2010 02:21:57 Windows is suspending operations
25/09/2010 02:21:57 Suspending computation - user request
25/09/2010 02:21:57 Suspending network activity - user request
25/09/2010 11:05:44 Resuming computation
25/09/2010 11:05:45 Windows is resuming operations

Re: Lost over 8 hours of calculating time

the thing you have to realize is these are beta work units.. problems are expected and every now and then it is expected that your result wont process right.

happy crunching

Beta testing is actually to prove that the system works. Trust but verify. It is alpha testing that is done purposefully to test for errors. It is expected that Beta testing is clean because the purpose of Beta testing is to verify readiness for live testing.

It is never EXPECTED that Beta tests will fail. I have seen Beta tests with zero failures. It is also not expected that you crunch Beta WU and not get credit for the time. What is expected is that there might be short term pains as a project completes final testing in order for the long term live testing to correctly perform its calculations for 100s of thousands of WU.
