My apologies if this is addressed elsewhere, but is there any reason to specifically use version 6.10.17 as is available on this site instead of the most recent version of 6.10.58 which is available on Berkeley's site?
Generally, I always run the most recent versions of applications, but before I download v58, I thought I would check to see if there was a reason why v17 is the version that is available from worldcommunitygrid.org. TIA! |

6.10.17 is the official supported Mac WCG BOINC client which has been tested and vented by the WCG staff. 6.10.58 has not been throughly tested nor officially supported by WCG, however from what I have read it should work just as well. 6.10.58 BOINC version may or may not have unknown features ('bugs" or other possible exceptions such as privacy concerns) that may hinder the complete crunching process.
Good luck with whatever BOINC version you decide to use. |

Word came that possibly WCG will launch 6.10.58, but have left note of 1 critical item, I think, that will catch out many existing members if using the vanilla defaults. LAIM (Leave application in memory when preempted) not on and the new "Whilst Processor usage is less then 25%." Die hard full load crunchers are recommended to swiftly set this value to zero or very high such a 75% or more (mine is 90% now). Usage bursts will cause BOINC to stop and unload the sciences to resume from last checkpoint (my own testing exhibited this) when LAIM is off. This is what then shows in the client message log, with LAIM on:
----------------------------------------8639 24-09-2010 08:31:09 Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high [cpu_sched] Preempting CMD2_0348-MYH3.clustersOccur-2QNK_A.clustersOccur_70_0 (left in memory) [cpu_sched] Preempting CMD2_0349-MYH3.clustersOccur-2IP1_A.clustersOccur_341_844081_844739_0 (left in memory) [cpu_sched] Preempting CMD2_0348-MYH3.clustersOccur-1M6B_A.clustersOccur_327_756284_756818_0 (left in memory) [cpu_sched] Preempting CMD2_0349-MYH3.clustersOccur-2DAT_A.clustersOccur_94_0 (left in memory) 8640 24-09-2010 08:31:19 Resuming computation Such a load spike pause takes typically 10 seconds. You don't want the sciences to unload just because the system was briefly exceeding that 25% load. cheers (Start Here FAQ has been in place for longer on this! http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28585 )

Thanks very much for the responses. So if I use v58 and make sure that I have the LAIM setting turned ON (I have 12GB RAM, so I'm not worried about memory usage), then I should be OK.
Thanks again! |
