Hi all apologies if i'm cross posting or doubling up.
I am having no joy getting boinc to work on x86 64bit Fedora13 i do the command line install as su no probs. Client fires up but after initial startup it says tries to connect to localhost and can't connect consequently i can't even attach to the project. I'm pretty certain i have tried both clients the one here in WCG and the newer boinc client. Both same result. Not getting anywhere fast very frustrating seeing as one particular project is linux only well that counts me out. I wiped a perfectly good install of windows for this :P Sorry linux fanclub members but the win and mac versions work straight of the bat. Not a compelling argument for converting platforms. Can't find localhost yeh well even i know where 127.0.0.1 is ![]() |

In the beginning there was the manual... the manual to install... the manual to install on fedora: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux which links to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Fedora
----------------------------------------Hope it points you the right way, but it reads like you started the BOINC Manager without first starting the Core Client daemon/service. Happens to the best. Welcome to WCG, the Forums and Welcome to Linux world.

Check the firewall and make sure port 31416 is open.

Has Fedora a firewall *on* by default? That's good to know as that I'd never have considered for home use Linuxes. Dug out the manual: http://labtestproject.com/using_linux/enable_fedora_firewall_configuration and will be studying this topic for Lucid Lynx/Maverick Meerkat. So far been relying fully on me router NAT and adding save IP's and port forwarders in there. Saves from having to configure multiple devices.

Has Fedora a firewall *on* by default? Yes. Opening the "pi" port is the first thing I do on a new install. ![]() |

Thank you sorry for not replying sooner i only just figured how
to get back here ;-) I won't delete this thread even though my initial vent is probably to be ignored by those not having any problems. Yes spoton about the client but even when i start that now it plays up as mentioned in my other rants lol. I will checkout those sites you mentioned it must be something i'm doing or not doing. I should have left it as was last time i got it working somehow but unfortunately other things in the server side went bung. If need be i'll just use the cmd line :P Thanks and happy crunching. |

So far been relying fully on me router NAT and adding save IP's and port forwarders in there. Saves from having to configure multiple devices. Well, studied, installed UFW/GUFW and find that it works for LAN interconnected device rules. Soon as adding an outside world rule and setting default "deny all" all external traffic is blocked, to include those where an exception rule was defined. Converse, setting "allow all" then defining rules to deny the unwanted is Russian roulette so it's off and back on trusting the router hardware firewall... which runs on Linux ;P vcobz, BOINC will not autostart if the default install pack was used when ownerships/permissions were change on a few files in the user boinc-client area (there are 4 v.v. Lucid Lynx such as the gui_rpc_auth.cfg. If you edit these, set the ownership back in case you changed that).
