From our SETI.Germany Blog:
----------------------------------------Computer theft solved thanks to BOINC The thief could not have anticipated this when stealing the iMac 27 of our member CR62! The stolen computer was running the BOINC software which does not only support scientific projects but, as it turns out, is also a useful anti theft protection installation. The iMac which was stolen from the office around 3am on August 25th was already contacting the BOINC project WUProp the next day to transfer data. The thus copied IP address was given to the police who consequently applied for a search warrant and managed to secure the iMac by September 2th. In response to the latest success of the BOINC project Einstein@Home where volunteers donate their unused computer time to search for pulsars and gravitational waves it should be said that: Not only was a Pulsar found but now also an iMac!! http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Computer_theft_solved_thanks_to_BOINC |

Not the first time this led to a thief of a BOINC Computer and goodoos on the action Kripos.
----------------------------------------Not everyone reads German and the wiki does not say so either, but the important part is that BOINC must be installed as service, so it runs before anyone logs in! No point if it only launches when a user has to log in to get it going.

Can we get the IP from WCG? AFAIK it's the only project in BOINC where it's not possible. So a non-CPU-intensive project like WUProp besides WCG would solve that problem without taking any crunching power from WCG if you only want to crunch it. |

When the story is right and a police report has been filed, things an insurance company require too, think that WCG under provision of the right credentials would not hesitate to provide the information.
----------------------------------------The evil bit is that if the client is attached to BAM, you can from there add projects to that client and change the scheduling too so that it reports frequently... short cache, short jobs.

A system could be attached to another project and run 0.1% of the time (covering outages and logging your IP). Not sure how frequently it would contact the server though. Its fairly easy to get the IP and lookup the ISP. With the right software you could even identify the house, but at the end of the day it would be the police doing the recovery, so it would be better if they contact the ISP and took it from there.

A system could be attached to another project and run 0.1% WUprop doesn't even need 0,1% of the CPU, on my system it usually takes about 40 seconds per day. It's a project by the team L'Alliance Francophone to gather information from BOINC projects. Their description on the HP is: About WUProp@Home WUProp@home is a non-intensive project that uses Internet-connected computers to collect workunits properties of BOINC projets such as computation time, memory requirements, checkpointing interval or report limit. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer. The WUs are for 12h wallclock time, only one per computer possible, and they report every 12h, or at the next best possibility thereafter. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Saenger at Sep 7, 2010 1:30:52 PM] |

Looks like a worthy project. Definitely. You can have a look at the results here. Here's for example the deadlines of WCG projects in days: World Community Grid ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Saenger at Sep 7, 2010 4:37:02 PM] |
