Hello WCG Forumers!
----------------------------------------My name is Nick, and I think, well... I may have a problem. At work, I constantly browse on the computer, well, for more computers. I want to increase my throughput on the Grid. At home, I have 2 computers and a server, and their only use is crunching. How do I get the most processing power per dollar? How do I not become broke? Do I need a blade server? Maybe I need a "(WCG) Psychiatrist or something ![]() ![]() |

Hello WCG Forumers! My name is Nick, and I think, well... I may have a problem. Hello Nick! At work, I constantly browse on the computer, well, for more computers. That’s an excellent way to lose your job. I want to increase my throughput on the Grid. As do we all. At home, I have 2 computers and a server, and their only use is crunching . How do I get the most processing power per dollar? Convert your dollars to Euros. How do I not become broke? Get a second job. Do I need a blade server? Please buy two as I want one too. But then you will be broke. Maybe I need a "(WCG) Psychiatrist or something ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Sorry, I was having trouble finding a serious question in there.
----------------------------------------As to going broke. Decide what crunching you can/want to afford and crunch within those limits. Generally speaking, newer processors are more efficient and use less electricity than old ones. Overclocking increases work done but uses more electricity and produces more heat. At WCG Linux seems to be more efficent than other operating systems. Keep your machines dust free and cool and they are more efficient. High-end cooling systems are a good investment. Trying to refurbish old systems is a bad investment. Thanks for crunching. Please send your 5 cents to IBM Global Headquarters, New York. ![]() ![]() |

Haha, you had difficulty because I have a hard time finding an excuse to post on the forums (duh!)
---------------------------------------- Thanks for those helpful hints and reminders that every cruncher should know! ![]() |

I have several times tried to look at the cost of running my four PC's 24/7 for crunching. It seems to come down to about the price of running a 100-150 watt light bulb, depending on the PC. I am running two Core 2 Duos, one i5 hyper threaded dual core, and one i7 hyper threaded quad. I have another i7 hyper threaded quad on order.
----------------------------------------You do reduce expenses by not running the monitor. So, on my desktops, I turn the monitor off when not working. On the laptops, I have the monitor shut off after five minutes idle. I think it is $5-9 a month per machine, which becomes insignificant with my total household electric bill running central air conditioning, lighting my architect told my wife we just have to have, etc. Yes, I can afford it. But, really, for the passionate cruncher, just be sure to turn out the lights you are not using, turn off the TV when you leave the room, etc., and you will be fine. |

I think it is $5-9 a month per machine, which becomes insignificant with my total household electric bill. I want to live where you live. It depends on where you live and what's in the machine. In my part of California, where electricity costs more than Gold dust, a well maintained I7 920 at 100% CPU 24/7, with 3 GTX260 GPU's at 100% GPU, 12 Gig RAM, 9 fans at 100% and a 1000W PSU costs ~$115/month/machine. I have recently shrunk the farm to 6 machines ... you can do the math. ![]() ![]() |

mitrichr, your two core 2 duo's would use about the same as an i7 in electric but do about 1/3 the work, between them.

Do you use the GPUs to crunch another project? Maybe you could close down the crunching farm for a few months (gasp, I know, not crunching would stink), but save that money up for a nice down payment on some solar panels. |
