Hello l_mckeon ,
How long is this expected to take? I have not been told. My personal guess is a slow statistical shift over a week.Lawrence |

ok, that was my thought...
as i can see, you guys are on the project for a long time XD what saddens me is, that C4CW and BOINC in general are not getting enough exposure and publicity. like i said its great to be a part and i try to get a lot more people running BOINC on their computers... |

I find most people to whom I mention WCG/BOINC don't want to participate. :( . No problem: I now have accumulated 1.53M points for C4CW. crunching, crunching, crunching. WCG says the project has completed 80,000,000 WU's. Is there any conclusive science, any papers published, etc?

There has been a paper published some time ago using the results from C4CW. Here's the link

Hi everyone. I used to work in water filtration for one of the largest water filtration companies on the planet, so naturally I was excited when I found this site.
----------------------------------------I don't work in the water business anymore, I actually have my own business staining and restoring wood decks, fences, etc. but I am very interested in clean water, because our business uses pressure washing to clean wood, and we are always concerned about environmental impact. We are concerned with the supply of clean water for our children's future, and we're concerned about any impact on our waterways. We are in Jacksonville, FL and a lot of the wood we care for is on our local waterways. Anyway, since our business has grown, and we're running computers 24/7 as it is, we thought we could dedicated a good bit of time to this project, while we're not utilizing the computers. We have a number of high end, very capable machines that can plug away this for many hours every day. So, I look forward to reading about the project's current results, and contributing some to future results. ** **Edited for appropriate forum language** TKH [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at Aug 6, 2012 1:40:27 PM] |

Hi LukeFlyswatter, welcome to WCG.
----------------------------------------As you may have seen elsewhere in the forum, the C4CW project has come to a slight pause, whilst the scientists check out the latest results/decide on where next to go etc. As such, I really do hope that you're allowing other projects to run on the machines you've got, and that you'll very soon be able to show off the various project badges that are available. One project that could well be very similar (and thus, meet's your interests), is the Computing for Sustainable Water (CFSW) project. Just a gentle warning though, there are some on these forums, who could very well perceive your 'background info', as advertising for your company - and as such, as spam. One very good way to counteract this, is by returning completed WU's and letting the badges (that will automatically be displayed - the first, Bronze, after 14 CPU days against one project), do the talking. |

Well, it will be interesting to see what results come about from these programs. I read the very small results section for the C4CW project. It seems the focus was very narrow, only looking at flow rates of water through carbon nanotubes for desalination. I wonder why things like large scale distillation of salt water isn't being explored.
----------------------------------------One interesting thing about water, unless it's lost to space as vapor from our atmosphere, we will never run out. It's just a matter of utilizing what resources are available to us, and not destroying the fresh water we already have. Distillation offers some interesting benefits, such as harvesting fresh, natural sea salt, while turning salty water into drinkable fresh water. I guess you need a PHD to consider these simple things though! ;-) Pressure Washing Jacksonville, FL [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 14, 2012 8:36:37 PM] |

Hi LukeFlyswatter, from my understanding of things (which can basically be written on the back of a postage stamp...), is that this project is focusing more on the poorer nations of the world - and I'm led to believe that large scale distillation could be quite expensive.

LukeFleswatter,
do not forget about energy needed to vaporise this water. Some volumes can be vaporised even by the sun's heat, but in order to supply a comperatively small 10,000 inhabitants' village you will have to build a vaporising plant. The project's goal is to find nanotubes with unique properties that speed up water molecules' flow through such membranes. This will help avoid the need of high pressure for the filtering, thus, making water filtering cheaper and more energy-efficient. |
