Alright, they are in my home now. He was more than helpful at the supercomputer centre and gave me cables and helped me carry them to the car. Also he showed me around and we had a great discussion for about an hour about everything from CPUs to managing a supercomputer centre.
----------------------------------------Now I will just have to take some time to make room and connect and try them out. Hopefully some of them will be on the grid soon :) Here a pic of them in my closet: ![]() ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by flodisar at Feb 5, 2011 12:00:47 PM] |

Leo.....WOW, that's a lot of metal. I bet the tour and discussions with the gentleman at the supercomputer center were very interesting. I think it's great that they donated their old hardware. I hope it goes well for you.

Thanks Chris!
----------------------------------------Yes, they weigh quite a lot each :) but your're right that the discussions were interesting. For instance he told me that they consume around 800kW, which I think is alot... just imagine what it would be like to get those machine onto the grid ;) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

So, if I just try to do a small calculation here... For instance, running 3 servers x 300W x 12h a day x 30 days = 324kWh/month. Those that do not have electricity included in the rent pay around $0,15/kWh so for a month that is $4,6 which is around $55/year Flodisar, there is something wrong in your calculation... 324*0,15=48,6$ in a month or 583,2$ in a year ![]() |

Oh, yes your are right. I got something messed up when converting from/to USD and SEK currency ending up with a factor 10 fault.
----------------------------------------Yes, good spotted Krakatuk. But as I said I will be measuring the actual wattage so as to make sure that it is resonable, and also as I mentioned before, many of those machines will primarily be for spares. Thanks for the correction though. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Got that right Chris. I put 4 servers in my moms basemant now the heat (electric baseboard) doesn't come on in the winter and she no longer uses her dryer, just hangs her clothes on the line and they dry in no time.
----------------------------------------So she's actually saving on power as the servers are much cheapr to operate than the heat and dryer.
One drop raises the sea.
