Oh yes, the famous wife barrier, standing in between a man and his toys :)
----------------------------------------Well, in this case it is not toys even though a new machine is always a pleasant surprise :) Argument 1: IF this new comp will replace an onld one then it will probably be more power efficient than the old one (well, depending on the type and degree of OC, lol) Argument 2: IF the new comp will be used as a Main PC in the household then it will certainly deliver notable performance increase which can be enjoyed not only by the WCG. Argument 3: You will increase the support for these very important projects Argument 4: Heating costs will be lower in winter times (don't mention the summer :) ) We should create a collection of arguments which can then become a sticky at the forums :) Ok, I feel it is getting late with decreasing amounts of oxygen reaching the brain so nighty night people! ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

I am lucky,
----------------------------------------I only married 3 years ago. My wife hasn't learned to put her foot down yet, though I'm looking up and can see it coming. I'll be happy with 4, and the occasional upgrade. My next expensive hobby is going to be the solar... Unfortunately the house we are building is facing east or west, (the long slope of the roof). The rear of the house (south) is flat (vertically). In winter here that will allow for panels on the rear wall of the house to get direct sunlight, being so far north here in canada... I can buy 4.7 KW of panels (20 on a pallet for $10,000 Canadian) then I have to buy the racking... but putting 8 panels on the east slope, 8 on west and 4 on south wall... means they will never be all working. Terribly inefficient... but I suppose better than nothing. Or buy 2 pallets worth, when I win the lottery ![]() ![]() |

Insane performance...and electricity bill! Two LGA2011 Xeon 8-cores each, overclocked, and with up to 96GB RAM...I believe that 4.7kW solar panels just might do the trick! :) Seriously, solar power is nice, go for it if you can afford it. At the moment I have a 1 room den so solar panels aren't possible for now. You could get a rotating solar panel stand that will turn with the sun. Then you probably can suffice with less panels and still get almost the same amount of power? I like the ground mount idea, unfortunately I have no where to put it.
----------------------------------------So Flodisar... Did you happen to see a price estimate on that mobo? I can find the price of the cpu's I think... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jack007 at Feb 15, 2012 9:00:15 PM] |

Yes the ground mount is nice, but one needs some place to put it. Don't know if there are smaller roof mounted versions of it but that would certainly be nice.

Oh I saw that I forgot to reply regarding the price of the mobo part...it is not released yet but it is this one mentioned here http://www.nordichardware.com/news/76-motherb...l-lga2011-processors.html It will be released pretty soon at CEBIT + some time for availability. That's a heck of a monster board! :) EDIT: I have now reached what seems to be stable 4.53GHz OC with RAM running now at 1920MHz. I am now at the safe limit temperatures for 24/7 crunching even with my Corsair H100 water cooler, but I think that these SandyBridge-E CPUs are solid performers. Considering that the standard frequency is 3200MHZ, it is a 42% OC, and that is worth every penny! :) ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by flodisar at Feb 16, 2012 9:12:38 PM] |

Hmm, my alienware case would certainly be large enuf to house that!
----------------------------------------42% overclock that is amazing! I'm at 4.2 with my I7 2600k and afraid to go more. ![]() |

Leo,
----------------------------------------you have build a great crunching monster indeed! Can you tell, how much power it takes from the wall socket while crunching @4,53Ghz? ![]() |

Jack, what temps do you have at 4.2GHz and what cooler?
----------------------------------------Krakatuk, Power from wall socket, just a moment...yes it shows 350W. My earlier system (AMD Phenom II X3 720 @ X4 3.4GHz), drew around 200W when crunching so yes consumption is up 75%, but crunch perormance is up more than 100% so overall is is more effiecient which is good. What is your most powerful crunching machine and how many watts does it draw from the socket? ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |
