Re: Boinc 6.10.58

I had a problem with v6.10.58 on one of my crunching machines - Win Vista, Intel core 2 Quad. The BOINC Manager would crash, giving an error message that the BOINC Screen Saver had stopped working. As I do not use the screen saver, this had me a bit nonplussed. Rhe applications would continue to run, but the manager would not. Uninstall (and lose all non-reported work) reinstall. Same thing after about 5-6 hours running. Remove & replace again, deleting the boinc screensaver application. Still the same story. Went back to v6.4.7 on that machine & everything is working fine.

I'm running vv6.10.58 on two other similar core 2 quads running vista, a core 2 duo running XP & a netbook with an intel atom processor running XP with no problems. All my machines are running the same version of AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall. Only the core 2 duo & the netbook have any application software other than BOINC installed.

Re: Boinc 6.10.58

Uninstalling does not loose the work... it leaves the data directory and upon reinstall the project should be showing as already attached, so add that to the riddle. It's not when you go into the desktop screensaver applet the reference to the BOINC is being slipped in? I've got it on Empty SS, 5 minutes.

ZA, to some the Kaspersky of firewalls. Set all 5 BOINC apps (boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe boinccmd.exe, boincscr.exe and boinc.scr) to freepass localhost and port 31416 plus ports 80 + 443 for grid server connection. In the AVG exempt the BOINC data_dir from scanning. Speed up things too.

Re: Boinc 6.10.58

What was happening was the boinc manager would crash. Upon restart, or reboot it would immediately fail to launch. Reinstalling resulted in the boinc manager giving a message that it was connecting to boinc client (which were running in the background) and never succeeding, ultimately seizing up.

To get even the older version of boinc to run I had to uninstall the program, physically delete every trace of the program, including the project directories) then install the older version on a clean system and get entirely new work. I did the same thing with v6.10.58 & it ran for about 4 hours, DL'd about 6 days worth of projects & then crashed.

I won't be attempting to install v6-10-58 on this particular computer again. As mentioned before, v6.10-58 is running with no problems on my other 4 computers & I have no idea what the program's problem is with the fifth.

Re: Boinc 6.10.58

Hi.

I've got a question about 6.10.58 for Ubuntu/Linux, has it got a better work fetch scheduler than 6.10.17 because this thing seems screwy.

It downloads nothing from one project then next time it gets 30 + tasks and nothing for the other projects, then does the same thing to another project not a few at a time.

I would like to see work for all projects on board and yes my all projects have an equal share.

I will upgrade if it's any better.

2. Possibles why there is no connection.

1) The easy one: Is the core client service (CC), boinc.exe actually started? If not, then the BM can't connect. If it is, then you're already/still crunching which you can find out with the boinccmd tool in a command window. The wiki http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd. Several WCGxxxxxxx_intelx86 processes should be visible in the Task Manager, when looking in with admin rights (hit button in TM left bottom for W7). Your text says the CC is running, so we're fine on that.

2) If the CC runs, but the BM cannot connect, something is blocking localhost traffic over port 31416. Suspects are UAC (Windows defender), Firewall/AV suites. See Help and Start Here FAQs search term "31416".

There's an extensive Vista install FAQ in start here, but essentially, if you install with protected execution mode and all users, I'd expect it to run without issue. In past, not selecting All users gave me ... connection problems on Vista/W7. Linux runs smooth as smooth comes.

The jury is out on that on a permanent basis, as when there's no hope to give you any sound comment without knowing all of your settings (Start Log, first 30 lines, and if you use local prefs, the global_prefs_override.xml content) and the weights/resource shares of the projects as seen in the project tab of the BM. My Linux quad with 6.10.58 from GetDeb goes out on regular basis to backfill the cache. Occasionally when a task runs much faster than the current TTC estimates, it fetches some more in one call such as just now when the C4CW as grossly overestimated at 5:53 hours, but really needing only 1:25. On a 2 day cache that already causes considerable cache TTC expanding and shrinking with each completed task. You'd also have to look at debts. Why erratic behavior to the casual observer?: Either one digs into the documentation, help FAQ's to understand or one lets BOINC alone and does not change the settings every other moment. BOINC needs weeks to figure out what is done, how long work takes e.g. so it can apply that knowledge to project CPU time allocation.

And, just reading the alpha mail list, it's still up to it's old "try starting many" trick with 6.10.58 when there is a panic state (too much cached). Caches of 1-3 days for those with good connection is more than sufficient. Anyone that caches more and constantly tweaks is doing it to her/himself... hit the books! The client defaults are there for a reason and are mostly fine.
