BOINC Files maintenance

Sorry if this has been already covered, I searched the FAQs and the forum but I couldn't find anything.

I see that BOINC uses between 160 and 330MB of HDD space on several of my devices. The biggest difference seems to be in the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org

It contains several files from all projects, even those that are already completed, like HDC, CEP1 and RICE.

Is there something that can be deleted safely in this directory (or others) to recover some space?

CEP1 is still in the intermittent category, but files related to HDC and Rice can be erased safely. Anyway, I think that if a file necessary for an application is missing it wll be automatically downloaded again.

Re: BOINC Files maintenance

Just deleting the files from the WCG-directory won't help, since the files will still be listed in client_state.xml, and will be re-downloaded next time client is started. The easiest, and best method, to remove the old deprecated application-files is to do:

1: Set WCG to "no new task".
2: Abort any unstarted WCG-work, or let all WCG-work finish.
3: Finish & report all WCG-work. (if really impatient, you can also abort any in-progress work, but any time used on this work will be wasted).
4: Reset WCG. It's also possible to detach & re-attach, but it's faster to just reset. If you reset, also remember to enable work-request again afterwards. wink

Resetting or detach/re-attach will clean-out all WCG-files, and only files for the applications you're later being assigned work from will be re-downloaded. Well, you'll also download some pictures even from WCG-projects you're possibly not running (like CEP2), but these pictures is only 76 bytes per file so should be insignificant.

Re: BOINC Files maintenance

That, I fear is not always the case and may depend on the version. I've seen files sticking after No New work, Project reset, so the additional step is, to set BOINC offline, navigate to the project folder and delete the remainder, if any, so you know for sure to start with a clean slate.

Sometimes even then some crud still comes down such as pieces for one of the recently expired beta tests, after having reached production... it does not bother me since on presently 2GB used by WCG for live work it's just peanut stuff.

If you want to clean a project folder and keep it clean, but not want to detach from the client, suspend the project instead of No New Work and then do the reset. This way, you can still see your contributions to all the projects you've ever crunched for.

Re: BOINC Files maintenance

Thanks for all your replies. I tried resetting the projects I'm not currently participating on and recovered some space. For now I'll leave WCG in peace, until some vacation force me to stop all WUs and then reset the project.
