I just got an amd computer with 6 cores. I tried to install ubuntu 10.04. When I installed boinc I get an error of it being a unsupported linux. When I installed unbuntu 8.10 I get an error message of peer certificate. I can not seem to get this computer to do boinc. It seems to everything else just fine.

Uninstall BOINC and reinstall using the Synaptic package manager (under System->Administration) and everything should be fine.
----------------------------------------If you are still having an error message like "App version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linux-gnu" please use this FAQ thread to fix it: BOINC: [error] App version has unsupported platform xxxxxxxxxx |

I tried to reinstall boinc and did not work. I tried to edit cc_config.xml but could not get that to work either. There are two of them. One in var/lib/boinc-client and another in /etc/boinc-client. They seem to be read only files.

I tried to reinstall boinc and did not work. I tried to edit cc_config.xml but could not get that to work either. There are two of them. One in var/lib/boinc-client and another in /etc/boinc-client. They seem to be read only files. Those files are owned by user boinc. To edit them, open a terminal and use the following command. sudo gedit /etc/boinc-client/cc_config.xml Insert the <alt_platform> entry, save the file, and exit gedit. Then stop and start the client per the instructions in the FAQ linked in JmBoullier's post. [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobCat13 at Jul 30, 2010 4:05:40 AM] |

Rick,
----------------------------------------Check in your message log which directory is the one in use. If your last install has been with the package manager the good one is likely /var/lib/boinc-client. Beside this, instructions given by BobCat13 are OK. Good luck. Jean. |

Thank you. I finally got it to work. I do not like the fact that I had to do it in the first place. One of the reason we have these new OS is that we do not have to do all that typing so I really hope come this October I do not have any problems when I update to ubuntu 10.10.

When you upgrade, all your BOINC files will still be there. I've done now 3 point release updates since 10.04 and but a boot, they were lossless events.
----------------------------------------PS, I've added a few more bits to the FAQ v.v. the sudo gedit command n hopes that future visitors will find and use the information. Hat tip to BobCat13
