Skeptical Friend

I'm having a hard time telling my friend about the benefits for crunching for WCG.

He is convinced that the results of the research are ending up in the hands of evil drug companies that are out to screw us.

Where exactly do these results end up when they are processed?
Can someone give me a link or something where I can read about who gets the results and how they are processed?

Re: Skeptical Friend

I can see that you, as an individual, have been devoting your unused CPU time to WCG for a respectable amount of time. That means a lot to the researchers/scientists who man the projects.

To explain this to your friend, I can only point him to this thread:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/research.do?fiterCategory=2_0

There is more than enough info for him to churn through.

As for the "evil science" theory, I can only say that I have lost a couple of very close family members to cancer, I'd rather not give my outright money to charity for the cause, but I'd rather donate £30 a month in electrical costs for the cause.

I'm very lucky to be a part of a team such as xtremesystems who care about their members as if they were family, we have such a small amount of members but our output for the cause is outstanding, second to teams who have many more members than ourselves.

I can understand your friend, since I have the same thoughts myself sometimes.

Maximize the cynicalness by pointing out they are going to screw us anyway, so you can at least save some lives by developing treatments faster.

The sooner the drug is developed the sooner it goes generic.

Re: Skeptical Friend

Cheers for that guys.

Sorry about the tone of my post. Its just he upset me quite a bit today. Something you are doing that you think is a really worthwhile cause and someone disses it like it is a waste of time.

I sent an email to my friend with this line highlighted

"World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community."

It is like in every other thing as well. Always somebody has a different opinion. I guess this is the reason they have a long thread from the topic in the F@H forums biggrin

Please take a look at it, as John Naylor has had a serious effort to answer all these questions

Re: Skeptical Friend

The results may go to the researchers, but eventually a drug company
will have to make a treatment from them. It cost 10s of millions to (i've heard)
billions for all the trials/development along the way to make the
drugs. Then they are usually publicly traded companies so they
have to post a profit. If 'profit' is evil then so be it. I'd still
rather have a cure.

Re: Skeptical Friend

well since the results go to the public domain and can be reserched from that point and then pattented and such so technicaly he is right there is a chance some of this reserch will make it to the evil drug compianies.

But the base work that its all based on will be public domain so other scientists and compianes will also be able to work on them as well so there is definatly also the posibility of 2-3 drugs comming out by 2-3 diffrent companies that will do the same or similar things

personaly I go by the route that i donate my power and computer life time to run these projects and know that all of my money spent will go to reserch as opposed to other donations you can make that only a small portion of the money will make it towards finding a cure

eithor way the BIG thing is that we are helping find a cure sooner and hopefully soon enough for us (especially since i am a cancer survivor)

Re: Skeptical Friend

Cant see the clean energy project leading to a drug; just clean energy.
Clean Energy means less Carcinogens, less illness and less need for drugs.
