Because the project is nearly 20% completed and most of us haven't been able to participate. Maybe the Windows launch won't come soon enough. or at allI really wanted this badge.... ![]() I should have this badge within a couple of days. I could not imagine going back to a Windows operating system personally. |

To be honest I don't see the point in releasing this project for Windows/Mac if its already 20% of the way done in nearly 3 months.
All that time spent porting it to Windows/Mac for it to be completed in another 2-3 months seems an awful amount of resources used (dare I say wasted) As soon as its released on Windows you'll see a huge return of results, not just those badge hunting, but those who have every project selected. Maybe it will be like HFCC where they have new targets in the future, who knows? |

but those who have every project selected Actually, no - as I do believe that, due to the very large download/upload file sizes, they'll still have to manually opt in (i.e., it won't be automatic). ![]() |

"Very large download/upload file sizes" is very subjective. Lets instead use a # so that folks that have equipment at colo (isp facilities) or 20 Mbps+ at home (or serious gamers) don't feel intimidated.
----------------------------------------('very large' to me, means terabyte files) These days you have companies considering running their enterprise system from a cloud, common place to download dvd-quality movies, and even some feel fine about backing up their home computers to a cloud. Anyways, yea, can anyone verify that this project is already 20% completed. (within 3 months?) If so, yea, it sounds like it may not be a good roi to create a windows client. (although, I must admit that I would love to finally work on a project that would take advantage of a server's ram, internet bandwidth and diskspace.) Is it really 20 percent complete? I thought the goal was serious testing on a subset of the Phase 1 results. Something tells me that the linux folks could not chew through 20 percent that fast.
Oh well I guess ill go linux for now. |

"Very large download/upload file sizes" is very subjective. Lets instead use a # so that folks that have equipment at colo (isp facilities) or 20 Mbps+ at home (or serious gamers) don't feel intimidated. The number has been given several times already, it is a download bandwidth of 128,000 bytes/s as computed by BOINC.The bolded condition above meaning that BOINC may find a much lower number than the speed of your line might mean, i.e. if the applications you are computing involve only small files. On the other hand, if your line is fast enough, downloading a few DDDT2 WUs is enough to boost the number computed by BOINC to a more realistic value. For example, after weeks of HCC crunching my bwdown can fall under the 128,000 limit sometimes. But right now, with a few DDDT2 WUs when I can grab some bwdown is back to 2,953,042! |

Oh well I guess ill go linux for now. 74 days of the 365 days I estimated is 20%, to include when it runs on Windows and long as that postpones it will get longer out before completion. We have no base of work volume, but it is more I seem to have seen than CEP1 that ran 10.5 months, on all platforms. I've removed the percent now since a few members get the number and only repeat the % part and not the relation, putting many on wrong foot! The base of the calculation of science progress is now printed in the WCGPI1 chart, Calendar or Volume. Hope that gives more perspective. cheers

Dear all,
Greetings from the Clean Energy Team, I just want to assure you that there will be plenty of work for Windows! Our team is working hard with IBM to iron out the kinks of the Windows/Mac versions before they are released. Also from the Harvard side, we are working to make sure our servers can withstand the additional load that this implies. The search is a combinatorial search over chemical space that is modified 'on the fly' as we learn more about the best structures based on our calculations and interactions with our experimentalist Stanford colleagues. For example, we might soon create a batch of about ~100,000 molecules for a particular subsearch that I am very interested on, because it might lead to a very good molecule fast. This is a combination of a subset of the large search space (reprioritization of certain WUs) and also addition of new ones that were not in the original list. We will try to keep you posted, but certainly the 20% was an arbitrary measure as Sekerob explained. The search strategy already is yielding very good leads, and when Windows launches we will explore the space faster and will be able to do much more subset-type explorations like this one. Cheers, Alan Clean Energy Project Team http://aspuru.chem.harvard.edu |
