Why is linux so much faster?

Hi all.

2 days ago I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. It has a Intel® Core™ Duo T2350 and 2 GB of RAM.It is dual booted with Windows Vista

An HCC WU takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes on Windows Vista while on linux it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.Sometimes even less.

Why is Linux version much faster in comparison to the Windows version?

Perhaps there is still some potential to be explored on the Windows version?

Either way I encourage everyone who has 24/7 computers crunching HCC to move to Linux.

Thanks

Re: Why is linux so much faster?

Plz realize that the science app is really one code base compiled with the best choice libraries ** available for each platform, the rewrite taking 8-10 months at considerable cost (human resource). What's available for Linux seems then to make it the choice platform for this Integer intense processing.

** Gray cells hazy, one of the tech/programmers once commented about there being a choice of 100+ such libs... that's allot of testing off an over overloaded work schedule, making sure the product is still outputting the absolute identical result... which it was as the old and new version proofed during the transition.
