Apparently getting a protein to form a crystal can be tricky.

I think a lot of HCC contributors will enjoy this podcast. Dr. McPherson has made great contributions to protein X-ray crystallography for decades, and is a clear and engaging speaker. He also happens to be a member of some of the same research groups as our lab. He formulated many of the chemical cocktails tested against proteins the HCC project.
