Jonathan, yours was the second invitation I got. No thanks though. I'll stick to free-lancing if I can't be a part of MOT. It is weird not being part of MOT but perhaps necessary. I clearly made a very bad assumption about the team - that because everyone was an adult, they would behave like an adult. It was NOT politics that drove me away. It was the serious lack of respect that some folks insisted on displaying. MOT is an international team and we actually at one point, albeit briefly, had a truly international discussion occurring as several non-US members got involved in the team thread. That's why I did not want to ban any specific topic. As a global team, if we could develop and maintain a global discussion, we could all learn so much from each other, among other things. We couldn't do that. We couldn't settle for routinely ignoring the established rules for the forums here. We couldn't settle for having others in the WCG community seek to have members of MOT banned, and not just on one occasion. We had to disrespect what our members had to offer simply because they weren't Americans and hyperventilate over a solely American topic. Because our views differed from some being expressed, we had to demean and ridicule those who believed differently who, when attacked, returned the favor in kind. I want to say we behaved like a bunch of ignorant provincial Americans but I don't want to insult the ignorant provincial Americans out there by lowering them our level. It does remind me of some of what I saw out of my six to ten year old nephews and nieces that were visiting last week. I don't want to lump everyone together but a team is no better than its "worst" member. I know that some folks just need a change of scenery at times but trying behind the scenes to convince others to leave with you is an open attack on the team you just left. An enthusiastic team member is a great thing but simple common courtesy would have you allowing the captain to make the decision to expand the team to a new project. After all, just maybe there is a rationale, a strategy behind the direction they are trying to take the team. The best part though is being so totally ignored when you ask the team to back off of a particular topic temporarily so that the problems and issues its discussion is causing can be reduced to a tolerable level in order to have time to examine and address the real problem behind it. Could I come back to MOT? To the MOT I left, absolutely not. Like MOT, I would have to change too. I was part of the problem. I failed as captain. Too many of us have buried friends and loved ones far sooner that we ought to have had to. We are here to do our part to help bring that to an end. Instead, we time and time again chose to insult, denigrate and disrespect those different from us. We might as well have spit in the faces of those we have lost. Keith, I'm very sad to see you this way. It sounds like you are apologizing for MOT and America, though, and that too, upsets me. I can't be part of your apology to the world. You were a great captain. Even better now since you learned that you can't control other people. We'll miss you.

This past month or so has certainly been tumultuous; unpleasantly so. My opinion is that it has been primarily because of political discussions. Keith, and perhaps others, sees it differently. Good Morning. Blizziie hasn't returned any results in quite a while. I am also not sure anybody wants the position.Based on Keiths comments above he is not likely to return. I am truly sorry he feels that disappointed; it is clear that he is angry with many of us, self included. Leadership, especially in completely voluntary organizations is very difficult and well beyond my capabilities. The way forward for me is to remain a member of MOT and WCG. My real purpose is to find cures and solutions to the science problems. In regard to MOT though, I know that the daily score sheet that Keith so generously posted was one of the interesting things about the forum. If very many of you feel the same way, I will create the code to display these numbers again and while I will likely not be as dependable as Keith, I will try to make it so that anyone can use it to look at/post the numbers. I am still rolling the ideas around in my head on how to do that. Blizzie. Hopefully you know you are the new Captain? Good Morning MOT. Dave, Dubby -- Thanks for coming back. That was my fault--i am a idiot!! You are certainly not an idiot!

You are certainly not an idiot! Well thanks for your kind words-------Good morning Dave and MOT ------- I agree that our friend Dubby is not an idiot; far from it. I do agree that he and others get carried away politically since it is so important to all of us. But this thread is not the place for political discussions. The chat room is where things like that should be discussed. While almost nothing is completely true, it has been my observation that any US citizen that apologies for the US, has not lived anywhere outside it for an extended period and hence only think they know what they are talking about. This myopia is endemic to the young and/or inexperienced. That is certainly not to criticize other countries; it makes no sense to do that. Countries, like people, just do the best they can given all their circumstances. Just like the US, they make tradeoffs and compromises, optimizing some things to the detriment of others. These choices seem to be based on cultural biases and historical circumstances more than anything else. If you think a country is better than the US, go live there for a while among the people, but don't give up your US citizenship till you have been there for several years. Many countries have lots to like and admire, which I do, but tradeoffs are omnipresent. As far as I am concerned this is and continues to be a multi-national team. This team has nothing to do with politics or nationalism but is about human burdens and the effort to help relieve those burdens and maladies. If we can make some friends, and help each other out along the way, all the better. RT Temporary, Interim Captain. "I know that some folks just need a change of scenery at times but trying behind the scenes to convince others to leave with you is an open attack on the team you just left." Who are you accusing? I am not aware of any plotting.? I think that Jonathan was just quoting from Keith's departing comments. I am not sure who he (Keith) was accusing if anyone but it kinda sounded that way. "I know that some folks just need a change of scenery at times but trying behind the scenes to convince others to leave with you is an open attack on the team you just left." Who are you accusing? I am not aware of any plotting.? It was not just the events of the past weeks that triggered my decision. What I had in my post were some of the things that occurred over the past 1-2 years. I cannot return to the same thing but I have not ruled out returning. Most importantly, I would have to change and do things differently. In the past, I was too concerned about keeping anyone from leaving the team. I have to recognize that if someone cannot work with the team to its and to their mutual benefit, they probably are on the wrong team. As it normally is in any messy situation, it was only a few that were problematic but that reflects on the team as a whole, especially to someone looking for a team to join. One of the interesting things about the current level of the forum software here now is that you can see who is browsing a thread. Since the software upgrade, I have repeatedly seen quite a few folks browsing our thread that ended up joining other teams. If you look back in the past, we had far more folks returning results each day than we do now. We have very many highly committed members still and some have high-end or multiple machines that return lots of results. Imagine what MOT could be doing if we had been able to keep the active members we had in the past and add those we have now! How we behave here in the team thread and in other forums reflect on the entire team. RT is right though. There is very little I can do to force a person to behave. Still, I ought to have been more aggressive about doing what I could have. I have a few questions that I need to pursue with the admins. With those answered, I will evaluate what my future role will be. MOT is a tremendous team. Just look at what we have accomplished, at the tremendous growth in our productivity. It is challenging to always be clear in a post being limited to just the written word. I am rather adept it seems at being unclear at times. I hope this clarifies things. |

Chris, I subscribe to the view that a captain is accountable to their team and for their team. In hindsight, I believe that if I had been less concerned about having a member leave the team and more concerned about stopping problems before they got out of hand, we would have had a lot fewer problems. That is why I was apologizing.
