I was able to load the 64 bit version onto a USB drive and get it to boot. Unfortunately it asks me for a username and password. Where do I find those since I have no interaction with the USB install? From Dotsch USB install notes http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/DotschUX-USB_Installation.html The password for the User boinc is boinc. I am using the CD boot with USB for persistent home dir. I tried the USB but it hung at grub screeen. *slaps forehead.* I don't know how I missed that. I read it 3 times. I did get past the login/pw but I can't get it to see my router so I can connect to the net. Being trying for hours. *me clueless *
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

My laptop wi-fi was not set-up so I used the LAN cable. Did you use DHCP or reply y to Q.5/5 to set up manually ? Suggest try the 32 bit as well.
Paul.

I was able to get it to connect and it is now up and running. I'm still having the original issue and that is when I reboot I have to go back and reattach to each project. I upgraded to the 64 bit version that Sekerob linked me to in his first post and the problem still persists. If someone can give me a step by step solution for this I would be in your debt. Otherwise I will back to windoze.
----------------------------------------I'm using an 8GB USB drive and 6GB of memory so there should be a way around this.

Come on gang. Why would someone create a distro that will run BOINC on a USB drive and not have a solution for this problem?

While running and attached to WCG, check out the data_dir path and the last written file date/times. Is it pointing to USB stick?
----------------------------------------For instance account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml job_log_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.txt master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml statistics_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml All these should be current with some having a timestamp that is from the last finished job. I just checks, at 9:18, timestamp 07:15 and a job that is currently running 2:03 hours is shown in BOINC Manager The stdoutdae.txt and client_state.xml should have an up to the minute timestamp. As to your question on the Why would someone create a distro that will run BOINC on a USB drive and not have a solution for this problem? Have you asked the creator? Given you've got the same disappearing projects on different distros, have you checked out the create/write permissions?

Given you've got the same disappearing projects on different distros, have you checked out the create/write permissions? How do I do that? Someone on another forum said I need to add persistence to the drive but from what I could find that needs to be done during the install and the installer doesn't offer that option on the distro I'm trying to use.

Probably it's mount... don't know. Took me a bit to get auto-execute that for remote disk resources but now my Windows Readyboost stick double acts under Linux for the remaining 4GB which was left from the 8GB and an Icon appears on the desktop after each boot.
----------------------------------------on permissions... Google and though shalleth find: http://www.linuxforums.org/articles/file-permissions_94.html

This USB evidently does not support Readyboost. From all that I have been able to find the problem is not permissions. It's that there is no casper-rw loop file and therefore no way to store what is in progress before reboot (aka persistence).

It's that there is no casper-rw loop file and therefore no way to store what is in progress before reboot (aka persistence). I have knoppix on my sticks, just installed from the CD or Universal USB installer. I do not need casper, I just downloaded and executed boinc into the free area of the stick. Knoppix allows to add a start script in the KNOPPIX directory, so I managed to create one that starts boinc during startup. That's it. Of course, on a larger stick knoppix install from CD offered the option to add a persistent drive, but not on my 1G stick. Regards, Martin ![]() |
