I'm trying to run a version of Linux called DCLinux on USB drives. It's a stripped down older version of Ubuntu that comes with the BOINC client as part of the install package. if I install it on an HDD it works fine. When I run it on a USB drive I have to reattach to the projects I'm running every time we have a power failure or I reboot said cruncher. I know very little about Linux. Is there a way to resolve the USB issue?

hi,
----------------------------------------You might want to start from scratch and visit Dotch/UX http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,28735_offset,0#272362 If it this you're trying to run, then maybe he can help you to get passed the problem. good luck.

I'm running the Linux version from here but if using the Dotch/UX version will solve this annoying problem I'll gladly switch.

nanoprobe,
----------------------------------------Seems this DCLinux runs off a ramdisk and only copies files back every 6 hours and on system shutdown. From that I'd read as when doing a normal system close that everything including your attached projects should be copied back to the USB drive. If that works, a rather elegant way to minimize wear on the memory stick. Since power-outs are frequent here may try this off the system on UPS, getting the WIFI to work the concern. I'd probably set that 6 hour interval to a lesser number. Now, how big is that RAM disk and how much swap-file does it use, if any? On a multi-core device things get hefty, so reckon that for a quad this needs probably 1-2GB. Maybe others that use the DCLinux version can pitch in with their experience. ttyl

I'll have to check when I get home from work. I don't know if it uses a swap file. How do I check? I am running quads and they have varying amounts of ram from 2-4 GB and the USB drives are 8GB.

I installed the Linux version from your first response on a USB drive with unetbootin. It would not boot. The start up screen would come up and start a 10 second countdown. When it got to 1 second it would start over and over again at 10.
----------------------------------------I have no way to look at or change the swap file because DCLinux won't recognize my password or let me change it. I know the PW is correct because I used the same one on every install. I guess me and Linux for DC were not meant to be.

I guess me and Linux for DC were not meant to be. Don't give up! My experience with Linux is marginal, and I have managed to get it running from an old 1Gig USB stick. Here is what I did: - I downloaded the USB installer from Pendrivelinux.com. - I ran the program, chose knoppix as the linux flavour, and that was it to end up with a booting and running Linux from the USB stick. - Finally I downloaded and installed (i.e. ran the downloaded file) BOINC for Linux from the BOINC website. If you have a larger stick you can choose to add a persistent drive. My 1 Gig stick still allows me to run the HCC project from the stick, all others need too much disk memory. Don't need mersistency, because BOINC can still use the available space on the stick. I then played around with the timing for the checkpoints, set it to 600 seconds. I also managed to set up kind of an autostart for boinc, so I just switch on and boot, and it runs. The option with a ramdisc and synchronisation at shutdown sounds very promising, maybe I need to try that when I have a bit more time.. Regards, Martin ![]() |

I was able to load the 64 bit version onto a USB drive and get it to boot. Unfortunately it asks me for a username and password. Where do I find those since I have no interaction with the USB install?

I was able to load the 64 bit version onto a USB drive and get it to boot. Unfortunately it asks me for a username and password. Where do I find those since I have no interaction with the USB install? From Dotsch USB install notes http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/DotschUX-USB_Installation.html The password for the User boinc is boinc. I am using the CD boot with USB for persistent home dir. I tried the USB but it hung at grub screeen.
Paul.
