Hi,
I am trying to add a project to my computer which has a (windows rated) "low" wireless signal. I keep getting an error message that the project is unavailable. Furthermore, I am unable to load the WCG home page more than intermittently and any other WCG pages at all. What is strange is that the rest of the interwebz is simultaneously working fine (ok, maybe a bit slow) with that connection strength including infamously slow sites such as wikipedia. Help? Thanks |

Greetings BHastings175,
Welcome to the forums. Since you are able to pull up the webpages every so often, the issue may be with your connection to wireless signal. Have you been able to try hooking up the computer with a normal Ethernet cable to see if you can connect to our site with consistency? Because different websites are hosted in different places throughout the world, you get different internet hops to get to servers. It could be that the World Community Grid servers are just more hops then your internet connection is willing to wait for. Let me know if you are able to connect better with Ethernet, because that would help us either eliminate (or pinpoint) the wireless as being the issue. -Uplinger |

Since having had major issue getting the WIFI to work, and then remaining connected though signal is 80%+ on Linux, went overboard and tuned what there is to tune.
----------------------------------------1. Added the WCG IP addresses into the OSses hosts file. 2. Added the WCG IP addresses into the router DNS table 3. Added the WCG IP addresses and ports (80+443) to the QOS Wireless and QOS LAN sections with priority 1. 4. Added the BOINC ports in amongst 31416 to the forwarding table for improved WLAN remote control. 5. Entered the google DNS servers primary/secondary IPs 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 into the router. 6. Set DHCP preferred IP addresses locked to Mac addresses. 7. Upgraded the firmware to an April 2010 release after a config backup and afterwards restored as things were still not stable. And presto, the WCG web and forum pages are screaming in, 802.11N so fast that ethernet can't possibly compete with that, BOINC up/downloading as if there's no tomorrow. Half if not anything would be needed, but that got things racing. Of course, I'm sitting on a wooden chair whilst the palms are leaning on a wooden desk :D The tracert just now got me till 206.108.111.106 after 16 hops in 148 ms, the last 14 timed out.

Wow, Sekerob
That is really something. I just use 811N. It works at LOW signal strength, unlike 811G or B, which just do not reach at all here. Of course, I set my network to ignore falling back to 811G, which otherwise might happen if my network picked up a stray 811G signal. It just works without any problems. Perhaps once every 2 or 3 months I have to power down and poweer up the routere if it goes whacky. Lawrence |
