Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 43 smilesmile

Keep on crunching! Am in the market for new computer an i7-980 or one of the I believe E54-- series. It seems the E54-- series are just as fast but cheaper. On a Dell Inspiron I have 2 E5440's which is a total of 8 cores and crunches more then my i7-970 with 8 cores. Both have more then enough RAM. So I am trying to built a machine that I can overclock, watercool and cost the least for most crunch. Any ideas?

As I recall, RT has posted a bit about the I-series chips in the past and the I7-980 was the best for the money. Still, these are not true 8-cores, just quads with HT. A true octo should outperform them much as the C2Ds did compared to a HT'd single core. I've seen posts mentioning true six-cores and even 12-cores. Waiting will always get you better for less but at some point you just have to go for the best for your needs at that particular time. Jonathan can hopefully speak to overclocking and watercooling. If you have the technical savvy, you may well do best to design your own using off the shelf parts from various suppliers. Just trying to pass along what I recall from past discussions on this topic. It's out of my league. wink

Good Morning MOT!

I'll be moving into my new place starting next week. So probably will be a few days of no results, until I can get my computers setup..

Basically, you are asking a question that is a bit out of my league. What you need depends on your circumstances: For example, if you live in a dorm room and have room for but one computer, you would go with the fastest machine you could afford without regard to electricity usage or the cost per unit of work. On the other hand, if you have a big place to live in a cool climate with low utility costs, you might swing to the other extreme.

In my case, I am somewhere in the middle so I look for the most bang for the buck. As a consequence I think that for my situation, the I7-860 is the most logical. They run 8 problems at once are low in power consumption (especially when paired with small video cards and "Earthwatts" Power supplies and about 4 Gigs of memory (not even all that is needed - 2 will do). And, in price performance are at the sweet spot (knee of the price/Performance curve). My limited experience with water cooling was not that good and I have had all the machines on air cooling for years.

If you want a truly high performance machine, I cannot provide any good direct advice. The other comments I have seen here about Gigabyte MBs and multi-core with hyper threading is all good from my point of view. One must remember however that the Hyper Threading of today with the I7s is a far different animal than the Hyper Threading of yesteryear. Today's version is far more effective .

So my real advice is to talk to those that have built these high-end machines over and places like Tom's Hardware. I have found them to be highly helpful (if slow to respond); like elsewhere there are some goofs over there so look at the ratings of anyone you take advice from. Good Luck..and let us know what you build..so we can at least be jealous. drooling

I have an i7 860 oced to 3.33 ghz in summer at 4.0 in winter, stable. Strongly recommend. I have the cheapo water cooling (comparable to Coolit Coolance ALC kit) and it does an ok job. I would recommend good air cooling and a nice open case like my Coolermaster HAF. Don't spend more than 1200-1500 total.
