ok thanks jim.
i'm going to try to overclock my i5 to 3.4ghz later this week, and might also get my q6600 @ 3.2ghz on this next month (its currently in another country!) |

2.08 Hours of CPU time per HCC task on my machine:

sej7278,
----------------------------------------if you need help with your GPU configuration, ask over at GPUGrid (you can send personal messages there, or just ask in the forum). You might want to note that the next project to finish here (WCG) will be Help Fight Childhood Cancer (HFCC). I would suggest you only crunch those tasks, if you want to get a badge for that project (due to end some time around June). Q8400 @ 2.8GHz 4cores being used W7Pro 64bit 2.1h Q6600 @ stock 4cores used x86 2.5h IC2D @ stock 2GHz both cores x86 2.8h [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Apr 26, 2010 6:20:46 PM] |

yeah i might try the gpugrid forums. i'd really like a way to configure boinc to only use the gpu for gpugrid tasks, and not use the cpu that should be dedicated to HCC. i don't know if you can dedicate a portion of gpu, i doubt it, but really not keen on the gfx card getting that hot.
now running at 3.4ghz, not made much difference over 3.2ghz, maybe just under 50mins a unit now. not fussed on badges, just want to help out and make use of machines that are doing nothing for 8+ hours a night. |

sej7278, Your GPU will do at least ten times more work than your CPU! The GPU tasks typically use a small percentage of the CPU. Sometimes it is as low as 3%. As you have 4 true cores, I dont expect the GPU would slow down your system too much. You can always select to not use GPU when you are using the system, directly using Boinc and if you have Boinc 6.10.43 you can snooze GPU from the task bar!
PS. In my opinion, HFCC is a truer Cancer research program than HCC, and the results would also help adults with cancer. The GPU folk also do some cancer related research. |

HFCC is more targeted on specific cancer.
HCC is rather basic research and so it is more comprehensive. And GPUs are good at mathematchical operations CPUs are better at data analysis (calculacions with large amounts of data and a lot of conditions if and case type and so) |

HFCC is more targeted on specific cancer. HCC is rather basic research and so it is more comprehensive. Furthermore HFCC aims mainly at the therapy, HCC's target is mainly the diagnosis. In fact HCC is more an x-ray crystallography project than a "cure cancer" project. However, it is worth all our efforts. |

The HCC project researches and facilitates automated crystal identification systems to expedite this time consuming and costly procedure. The crystals can then be X-Rayed to identify the proteins molecular confirmation, which in turn helps scientists work out function and potentially find cures by looking at drug interactions, as so on. The HFCC is doing this last step!
----------------------------------------Although crystal growth of proteins that are related to cancer may be the choice of the lab doing this, such crystal selection procedures could facilitate the identification of any viable protein crystal. So the refinement of this selection method could help in many areas of medicine and biology as a whole, not just cancer. Anyway, both are good projects. Hi guys, need some help... I'm planning my next CPU upgrade. My PC is used mainly 24/7 to run HCC and HFCC. Is there any database where I can compare the performance of i5 to i7 to Phenom X4/X6? Which is the most efficient CPU to chose from a performance and power consumption point of view?

It will not help with the power consumption information. |
