New FCC rules may impact Linux-based devices
----------------------------------------New U.S. regulations went into effect today that could change how vendors of devices with software-defined radios (SDR) use open-source software. The new rules could impact manufacturers of mobile phones, WiFi cards, and other devices that use SDR technologies. http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/New-F...mpact-Linuxbased-devices/ |

Suggest folks start downloading those nice apps before they disappear. Nice meaning OC apps and such.

For those on (Ubuntu) 10.04 LTS:
11 Kernel Vulnerabilities in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Upgrade Now. http://news.softpedia.com/news/11-Kernel-Vuln...-Upgrade-Now-233484.shtml 11.10 is OK, but as a desktop and actually using it heavily while crunching is still not earning full marks... always the CEP2 jobs failing at one point with Signal 11 (heartbeat issue)... best set client to suspend when using system if just for an hour. 14.5 hours gone south again yesterday, whilst the DSFL just restarted with ''if this happens frequently..." as would the clean water do. No sure if Linux is a mono or multi-task skilled OS these days. It's though great if running GUI-less and act as a file/printer server while crunching. --//-- |

Today I did a Xfce install in a Gnome 3.2.1 session,
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/xubuntu Ran smooth in a terminal, then logged out and logged into Xfce. Looks naked, but much speedier (what'd you want without any eye-candy). All is still working, the menu looking cluttered now with all the features and apps still loaded of both Gnome and Xfce. -Top- in a terminal clearly shows more cycles going to BOINC and so far the enforced pause when CPU use (non-BOINC) is >= 20%, yes 20% else CEP2 tasks run risk of crashing has not kicked in. The next step is more of daredevil level... getting down to an OS+interface only taking 40MB of memory, so is claimed: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce Carefully read that top line as the commands change with the different distros, 11.10, 11.04, 10.10, 10.04 et cetera. No wonder the site is called -psychocats- . Think I'll first make a persistent install to a memory stick to check this out. --//-- |

P.S. Here's where the 40MB claim was introduced:

I seem to be going through a similar stepwise process, but with LXDE.
----------------------------------------One of my machines that was still running Ubuntu Lucid started dropping its wireless connection many times a day. Rather than just mess with newer drivers, I decided to install 11.10. All its WUs finished and uploaded yesterday afternoon, so last night I got to work. I installed 11.10. At first I thought the installation failed because the screen display was so messed up, but adding the proprietary drivers fixed that. Then I installed LXDE, rebooted, and selected it as the desktop. I had some small glitches with installing all the updates, which I think had to do with Unity and LXDE having different default packages and dependencies, but those were resolvable. I still need to do a little tweaking, but everything is running smoothly. The Internet signal has held for 12 hours, so so far that's looking good. WCG and GPUgrid are running fine under BOINC. ![]() |

Yesterday saw a warning dated the 21st on an OMAP4 vulnerability which referred to an article dated the 15th http://news.softpedia.com/news/Linux-Kernel-V...-11-10-OMAP4-234739.shtml. Expecting a kernel *update*, today the *upgrade* screen popped up to tell there there was a kernel update from 3.0.0-12 to 3.0.0-13.22 PLUS 147 more files for the loony total of 244MB. One bug, and half of the Ubuntu distro need recompilation, such as LibreOffice was included and many other interface updates... So much for the impact of one bug... starts to feel like Windows 7 SP1 Déjà vu.
Now I'll wait till the CEP2 jobs have finished to boot and see what has been broken as Gnome 3.3.2 was included on the go. --//-- |

The repositories Boinc 6.12.33 hangs on Ubuntu 11.10 :((
Lost 2days work as it sat idle. Installed 97updates last night, restarted, found another 27... Must check if Boinc is still running, again. |

I have had BOINC 6.12.33, installed from the Ubuntu 11.10 repositories, running on two machines for a couple of weeks and have not had any trouble with it.
----------------------------------------On one of those machines I did a clean install of Xubuntu, so the Unity eye candy packages were not installed at all. I am very happy with it. The user interface is fast and simple, and as Sekerob has pointed out, there's much less overhead taken up by eye candy so more resources go to crunching. The only (very small!) downside I've experienced is that installing software like BOINC or VirtualBox takes longer because some libraries that would have already been there with Ubuntu have to be downloaded and installed. I expect to go to Xubuntu on all my machines over time. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by kateiacy at Nov 22, 2011 2:22:11 PM] |

Same here, not the slightest problems with Ubuntu 11.10 and BOINC 6.12.33 -- for at least 6 weeks now.
----------------------------------------@SekeRob: If new versions are released for e.g. LibreOffice (3.4.4, released on 9 November) or Firefox (8.0, released on 8 November) this has not much to do with the Kernel update. It's just a coincidence I think. IIRC, there were 12 security updates today, the rest should be "normal" ones. ![]() |
