Re: This really should be easy

Well hundreds of thousands have no problems......maybe the fault lies at the other end?

Scribe-

You are correct. Currently 319,557 on 586,931 machines. With all due respect, these are pitiful and piddling numbers, in a world with about one billion computers.

I am not a technical person, people and CA's at WCG forums and BOINC Message Boards have given me tons of help. But I am intoxicated by this work, so I persist. Many will not, so this current active number is out of 1.94 million. Sure, lots of people stop fort little more than the electric bill. But non-tech people can get quickly flummoxed.

Re: This really should be easy

Sadly BOINC is like any other Windows application and is installed same way too. Also, you have to have administration rights just to be able to do the client installation.

I get lots of calls from my relatives conserning computer problems and I'm happy to know that I can help them. So, in the age of internet and forums, phones still work alright :D

The admin rights needs and special BOINC limited scope crunching accounts were added for reasons... such as to prevent stealth drive-by installs and to encapsulate what BOINC could do if ever a project attach could load a viral like app, turning the device suddenly into a zombie agent. You're not the owner/have no permission... no install.

Re: This really should be easy

Today Firefox mentioned that a part of Java needed to be uninstalled because of instability on most of my boxes.

Am I helping? Or just increasing the confusion?

Sek the HELP button and all the links work perfectly on my machine.

I am in administrator mode.
I am the master of my machine.
I own the soul of my machine.
I am the universal cosmic god of my machine.
I have the right of life and death on my machine.
......
I created my machine.

Now you understand why it can nothing but always work on my machine.

P.S.
Sek don't bother call the ambulance and the psychiatric hospital. In fact I am already there and connected from my blackberry (they forgot to take it away) to the forum from the WCG maddness ward. I try to have boinc running on the blackberry but it's hard and maddening.
They treat us in a inhumane way. They put us tied up in front of a 3 mt wide screen for 8 hours a day, with a flashing MyGrid page with all badges with a red cross on them in bold red with the mention "Cancelled", and all the project numbers Point, Runtime and Results numbers are with a big 0 . The worst was seeing the BETA project at 0. Some of my friends here when they realized that also BETA was at zero, have entered a complete vegetative and comatous state.

Yes, saw some note pop up that a java add-in was pre-emptively disabled and read up first to make sure it was not some trick... like that AV scam software that tells you your computer is loaded with malware, so you kneejerk into buying the malware itself ;>)

Re: This really should be easy

Go to top of THIS page and select Help button on the right -

that gives a page with 3 columns of links, none of which work -

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewHelp.do
I tried many of the links and they all worked for me on IE8. shock
I don't see anything fancy in the page source code for those links, just plain ol' HTML. There is java on the page, so if it has been disabled on your computer I don't know what effect it would have. I don't know how to disable it so I cannot test.

Cheers coffee
