Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

The status of the Human Proteome Folding project may be found on this thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=3206

There's an update on what we can expect: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2612

We have 3 proposals from non-profit organizations in our review processs but are reluctant to publish information about these proposals until we are pretty sure they will be approved. Information about our review process may be found at: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/submit_a_proposal.html

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

Will all information generated from WCG projects be placed in the public domain? Will any results remain proprietary? Will any results be for sale?

If you click on 'About Us' you will see:
"World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community."

So it is all public domain. This is part of the Letter of Agreement signed between the WCG and any organization whose application we run. It is a binding legal contract stating that all the results we provide using our computers are PUBLIC DOMAIN and must be available in a publicly accessible database in a reasonable length of time.

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

Has the take up of proposals / interest to run new projects been significant.
IE has the success of this project brought a large number of parties interested in proposing new projects for the grid -single figures, in the tens,hundreds..?

Also would we be able to run a number of different projects in parallel like grid.org do at the present - are there plans for this in the next wave of projects after Proteon Folding Phase I has completed.

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

Hello barney15c,

Yes, there has been some response. We ought to be able to offer at least a choice between 2 projects to our members, though nothing is totally firm yet.

Maybe by this time next year there will be more than ten proposals being competitively reviewed, but we have had to start out by shaking the bushes a bit to get anyone besides the ISB to propose a project.

Thank you Mycrofth for your reply.

I have to say I am somewhat suprised and a little disappointed that a lot of scientific institutions etc have failed to realise the huge potential and massive resource that WGC offers to do good for mankind. I was expecting more than two projects (I assume there was more but possibly did not fit the criteria for the proposal to be accepted) to have been submitted for approval.

I am therorizing here but could it be that :

a) These institutions are adopting a 'wait and see' stance to see if the WGC is not a - well meaning but 'Flash in the Pan' scheme that may peter out after the euphoria has died down concept.

b) More work needs to be done to publicise the huge resources available for institutes to tap into to solve Non Profit problems for the benefit of Mankind.

Possibly when the Linux Rosetta Agent has been introduced it may kick start things up again , things seem to have slowed down a bit from say a few months ago - probably attributable to the Summer months. This may bring in more proposals as the grid gets bigger with more participants.

Your thoughts on my comments would be appreciated

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

[Sigh . . .] This thread lost its track back in the Pleistocene.

Hello barney15c,
I think bbover3 described the situation accurately in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2612#16941
People develop research projects that they can do with available resources. We have just increased potential resources with millions of dollars of computer time but it will take some time before there is much traffic to our door.

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

I have a lot of friends who are well established in both academia and industry. I have bounced grid computing off them a number of times to just a look of disbelef and blankness.

I belive it will take a major success like finding et or a gravitational wave before joe blow scientist figures it out.

It was mentioned by a science aquantinece that the public domain clause was a hurrdle since most researches want to publish multiple papers on a singular research project.

Re: CALL FOR QUESTIONS

I do have some questions. For instance, what's the purpose of this poject? How does it affect medical science development? Will this project help gene therapy in any way?
