Today we reached 10,000 years of computing on the WGC and have completed 60% processing in 6 months (A remarkable achievement in such a short period of time).
----------------------------------------Taking into account that it took a while to get up to speed, would anyone like to take an educated guess into how long it will take us to complete this stage of the project if we keep at the current rate of processing. 3 months... 4 months.... less??? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi Barney,
If we keep going at the rate we folded at over the past month, I figure we would be done in a little over four months. However, with the summer coming up, it may take longer. On the weekends, processing time drops by a whole decade per day. The figures for yesterday were off and Canada had a holiday (not sure if it was U.S. Memorial Day as well). I think European participation is based more on home computers, but even that will be affected if people turn their computers off when they go on holiday. The Southern hemisphere, of course, is at the beginning of winter, but if geography statistics are reliable (and they may not be: too many members with no known region) this won't make up for it. Even going at the lower weekend rate, though, we should be done in less than five months. Anyone else have any guesses? |

Ofcourse, a lot of computers will be turned off in holidays, but we get more and more members every day. BTW: the most supercomputers that are working on that project will continue to work, even in holidays ^^ BTW2: i would like if the agent software would display the current status of the project (like now, ~60%). So you can see that there really happens "something" ;) BTW3: already ideas for new projects??? |

However, there is the fact that in the beginning of the project there were a lot less members. It has taken a long time to accumulate all of these members, some of whom have some serious crunching abilities. So, even with the summer lulls, our returns will still be much greater than they were for the first 4 months. Of course, it is possible that we may also get an influx of new members as a result of a news story or some "creative" recruiting (something I'm working on right now, myself). My guess is that we will have a wrap on Labor Day. ![]() |

46 days, 23 minutes and 5 seconds.....
hows that for an uneducated guess! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Please don't ask me to justify this........ I can't! |

Actually, I am basing this on us continuing at the average rate we were going at over the past month, not on our rate since the project started. I was a bit disappointed to see that the project actually does not seem to be picking up momentum. If anything we seem to be slowing down. If you don't believe, check out the global statistics history. In April, it was really common for the grid to reach over 60 years in processing time, but that level hasn't been reached at all in May. It's also been weeks since we reached more than 13 million points on any given day, a number we used to reach routinely. Does anyone have an idea what is going on and what can be done to turn things around?
It seems like numbers of members is increasing, but people are not contributing as much as they used to. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. |

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Christine, If you look at the daily statistics, we saw a drop in the daily results right after the agent was updated with the 'throttle' feature. This is probably due to some members not allowing the agent to connect through their firewall or otherwise deciding not to participate at that time. Hopefully, those users will return. A lot of people have been asking about the Linux agent and the next project. Hopefully, World Community Grid has some big news coming up about those that will draw a new burst of members when they make some specific announcements. Something that maybe we can do as members is get some of the large online communities interested in joining as teams. When slashdot got interested they brought enough members to generate over 2 years/daily of run time. Tribal War brought enough members to generate over 1 year/daily of run time. Perhaps some of the members here who participate at the other large on-line communities can get those communities interested in starting teams? Just some thoughts, The Aspens ![]() |

We are looking at 3-6 months at the current size of the grid.
Lets hope it keeps growing so the next project can roll in. back at the ISB we have 6 terabytes of data and were getting it worked into a usable database ( at the ISB and the university of washington). |

So, it seems that we should be completed by now. Anyone have the current stats?

So, it seems that we should be completed by now. Anyone have the current stats? Brad, rbonneau (the lead scientist for the proteome folding project) wrote in the post immediately prior to yours that it should take about another 3-6 months to finish the project.... I think that post answers your question (and corrects your statemment that 'it seems that we should be completed by now'). ![]() |
