Hi
when I am not using my PC I get the world community grid screen saver so I presume that it is working ok. When I come back to use my PC, it is locked and no keys (even CTRL + ALT + DEL, Escape etc) will not allow me to gain access. Not even the turn off button held in constantly!? I have to pull the power socket from the PC. I have looked in FAQ and found "Set the sensing of mouse and keyboard activity to stop BOINC during use [While computer is in use]" but no instructions how to do this. Please help or I will just uninstall BOINC. Which seems a shame but hey come on my PC is my PC. Thanks in advance. Please hurry as it is in suspend mode! ;) |

Hi
I tried the Escape key but it did nothing. I am running Windows XP Media Centre Edition on this PC, I do have Vista on Vaio and Windows 7 on my other PC although I haven't installed BOIN on there. I am running Norton 360 Internet Security which may have been the problem. I have altered my program settings to allow the program world community grid. SO fingers crossed it may work. If it freezes again I will just uninstall it and install on my other two systems and see how it goes. I do want to help a good cause. :) |

It could also be faulty hardware. Double check the capacitors on the motherboard and make sure none of them are swollen or leaking. I have seen systems that ran fine until it got a full load on it. Then it would lock up as you described. It ended up being bad capacitors. If you are not sure what to look for, do a YouTube video search on it. They are pretty helpful.

It would be interesting to see the cause of this. I decide to not use the BOINC screen-saver because of this issue (pc would be stuck on screen saver and I would need to power-off to regain access) but as I upgraded from 6.2.8 to 6.10.43 it (very unhelpfully) changed my screen saver to the BOINC saver, and set the delay to 5 minutes! (I wish it would've asked during installation..)
After the screen saver kicked in, I cannot wake the pc with any mouse move or key-press. It seems as if the screen saver will-not awaken but other tasks are still running on the pc (as I hear new mail notifications etc) so the pc itself is not 'frozen'. I experienced this issue on previous versions, and I'm running WinXP SP2 on a DELL Dimension: 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Starting BOINC client version 6.10.43 for windows_intelx86 15/04/2010 15:26:53 log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.3 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Data directory: D:\Temp\Boinc 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Running under account Drekidd 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6] 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Processor: 2.00 MB cache 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss htt tm pni ssse3 cx16 nx lm vmx tm2 pbe 15/04/2010 15:26:53 OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Memory: 3.00 GB physical, 3.33 GB virtual 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Disk: 203.71 GB total, 50.75 GB free 15/04/2010 15:26:53 Local time is UTC +1 hours 15/04/2010 15:26:53 No usable GPUs found 15/04/2010 15:26:57 rosetta@home URL http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID 332284; resource share 50 15/04/2010 15:26:57 SETI@home URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID 2774594; resource share 50 15/04/2010 15:26:57 World Community Grid URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 476360; resource share 100 15/04/2010 15:26:57 World Community Grid General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 11-May-2009 11:37:09) 15/04/2010 15:26:57 World Community Grid Host location: none 15/04/2010 15:26:57 World Community Grid General prefs: using your defaults 15/04/2010 15:26:57 Reading preferences override file 15/04/2010 15:26:57 Preferences: 15/04/2010 15:26:57 max memory usage when active: 1534.92MB 15/04/2010 15:26:57 max memory usage when idle: 1841.90MB 15/04/2010 15:27:18 max disk usage: 0.75GB 15/04/2010 15:27:18 max CPUs used: 1 15/04/2010 15:27:18 don't use GPU while active 15/04/2010 15:27:18 suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 % 15/04/2010 15:27:18 (to change, visit the web site of an attached project, 15/04/2010 15:27:18 or click on Preferences) 15/04/2010 15:27:19 Using proxy info from GUI 15/04/2010 15:27:19 Not using a proxy 15/04/2010 15:27:19 Suspending computation - initial delay 15/04/2010 15:28:55 World Community Grid Restarting task ng760_00009_0 using hpf2 version 603 DHD |

There was a loop issue that should have been fixed with 6.10 where the come-out screen actually disappeared underneath the screensaver in 6.2
----------------------------------------Can you confirm the little boinctray.exe is running? ttyl PS: Don't like you D:\Temp\BOINC path, but that's another matter. Not that your cleaning software mistakes the actual project data for disposable files.

The new Boinc is causing problems all across the scale. I've had to remove it and revert to the older version that worked well around here.

I am having this exact same problem. Hitting escape or any other key or key combination doesn't seem to do anything. This seems to only happen when I am telecommuting. Yesterday at the office, the screen saver responded, but today again at home, I had to hard boot to regain control of my thinkpad. Running BOINC 6.2.28 and I have Windows XP.

Hello Kaxup,
Are you running the World Community Grid screen saver? If yes, please change your screen saver to something else, or none, and let us know if you are still experiencing problems. Thanks. Tedi |

I just installed a couple of days ago and have been having the same problem as well - system can't recover from the BOINC screensaver - need to hit reset. Was going to uninstall until I saw this thread - will give the suggestion a try.
BOINC 6.10.56 Win XP SP 2 AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.83GHz 1.5GB RAM I've disabled the BOINC screensaver so will see if it is more stable. DPossible |
