Client fails to run on start-up

I recently got an email saying I hadn't returned a result for a few months. I tried to think what could of happened, but I've not done anything significant to my PC since then.

I've tried reinstalling the client to see if it runs on start up, but with no luck.

I then tried a complete uninstall and hunted around for any files left over that could cause clashes and deleted them. Then did a fresh reinstall of the client. Again, no luck.

I checked to make sure it wasn't a stupid error on my part that the client wasn't running on start up, but it was there on my list of start-up programs (boinctray.exe is set to run on start up).

Does anyone have any ideas why the client fails to run on start up, despite it being set up to do so?

Cheers

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

Got more info on your system?

boinctray is only the sensory part to track if mouse/keyboard is active. What should run at start up is boinc.exe, as a service, or launched with by boincmgr.exe as a user application.

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

I'm running Windows XP SP 3, do you need any other information?

How can I add something to start up? I thought just adding a short-cut to "start up" folder would do it, but I just get something in command line appear.

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

Please uninstall and reinstall BOINC with the WCG 6.2.28 package you can find via the WCG My Grid Download again link. When the reinstall screen appears, fill out the protected mode AND allow all user boxes. That should set the client to start before logging in. Then no startup folder items is required.

See wiki: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation

Via the Boincmgr Advanced > Options screen you can control if you want BOINCmgr GUI to load too upon sign-in.

edit:

[yes starting boinc.exe itself manually or via shortcut will create/open a command line window. BOINCmgr.exe needs to be run to start the core client boinc.exe].

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

I tried to follow that installation guide, however my install screens didn't look like that. I had the choice to set two destination folders and also some tick boxes underneath them. I also did not get the option to select the set up type, or if I wanted start BOINC on start up or to set it as my screensaver.

I launched it after installation and then went to the options you suggested but it was already set to launch on start up.

However, the client didn't launch on start up and it doesn't appear in the list of start up items in msconfig.

...what were the tick boxes underneath?

The installation screens will vary a bit depending on the version, hence why to make it easy also for the support side to go with the WCG version 6.2.28.

As per Scribe, what are those tick-boxes? Is there an advanced button somewhere down below? The operation will activate some grayed out fields.

You need to run the installation as someone with administration rights in order to get the service to install properly and the BOINC Manager account to be created.

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

I did choose the 6.2.28 version of the software, unless the download link you get to from "My Grid" is wrong?

The two folder options were:

"Program Directory"
"Data Directory"

The three tick boxes were:

"Use the World community Grid - BOINC Screensaver"
"Install as a service and run under a restricted account. A reboot may be required after installation"
"Allow all users on this computer to manage the World community Grid - BOINC software"

I don't want the screen saver, so I unticked that option. I am unsure what the second option meant and so unticked that. Since I am the only user on this PC, I saw no need to tick the final box.

As said above, I am the only user on this PC and so I have administration rights.

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

Well, there is the Administrator as administrator and there are users with administrative rights which is not necessarily everything. Now, if you want to run without getting into the deeper BOINC technical psyche, uninstall and re-install and tick that All User box. It's the only reliable way not ending up in trouble, with BOINC.

edit: The service [aka protected] option is not required in this version, but recommended as boinc.exe service [aka core client] will load before signing in and will continue to run when signing out.

Re: Client fails to run on start-up

...I agree....except do not tick the screen saver box. I never do and never had a problem. Having ticked the screensaver box means it only runs when the screensaver is invoked.....waste of time!

Tiking the server option is the critical one....means it runs when the machine starts up, that's the important one.
