How to improve BOINCs usage of memory and SWAP Memory

Hello everyone,
I just checked the system control of my Linux PC.

In the statistics of the system control I found out, that the usage of
Memory is permanently is at 37,9 per cent and the usage of SWAP memory is permanently at 19,1 per cent.

Wanting to change this, I checked my BOINC settings, both the online ones and the
settings in the BOINC Client itself.

The online settings are as follows:

Disk Usage
Use no more than: 99.0 Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: 0.1 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: 99.0 % of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 60.0 seconds
Memory Usage
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
Use no more than: 100.0 % of memory while computer in use
Use no more than: 100.0 % of memory while computer idle
Use no more than: 100.0 % of virtual memory

The settings in the Client itself are as follows:

Use not more than 99.0 Giga of Harddisc
Do not use more than 100 Per cent of Processor

Currently I have set the settins of the client as valid, and not the online settings.

In other words: The computer uses the settings in the clients

If I make the online settings valid, I get the following message:
Sa 27 Mär 2010 15:57:36 CET||Host location: none
Sa 27 Mär 2010 15:57:36 CET||General prefs: using your defaults
Sa 27 Mär 2010 15:57:36 CET||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 503.54MB
Sa 27 Mär 2010 15:57:36 CET||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 503.54MB
Sa 27 Mär 2010 15:57:36 CET||Preferences limit disk usage to 0.76GB

Note: To make sure, that the online settings are really valid, I made the client send a sheduler request. I got the resoponse as follows:
Sa 27 Mär 2010 16:00:57 CET|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 3 completed tasks
Sa 27 Mär 2010 16:01:01 CET||A new version of BOINC (6.10.17) is available for your computer
Sa 27 Mär 2010 16:01:01 CET||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php to get it.
Sa 27 Mär 2010 16:01:03 CET|World Community Grid|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

Still the usage of memory and swap memory does not change.

The only thing that changes (compared with using the settings of the client itself) is, that CPU usage is now gining up and down from 50 per cent to 99 per cent instead of being steadily at 99 per cent, how it was when I used the settings in the BOIC client itself.

In other words: On my linux system it is better to use the Client settings instead of the online settins, because then CPU usage is better.

But: In both cases, SWAP memory and memory usage is too low, at 40 per cent memory usage and 20 per cent of SWAP memory usage.

My question now is: Is there any other possibility left to improve memory and SWAP memory usage?

I now that my question might be tricky. Thank you for any help in advance.
Greetings
Martin Schnellinger

Re: How to improve BOINCs usage of memory and SWAP Memory

Hello,
I want to give the following additional informations:

Writing client settings I mean the settings in the simple view of the BOINC Clients not those in the advanced view.

Your performance limit is very clearly the physical ram. I've been running for weeks in an experiment with VM disabled and afterwards had to conclude that it barely made a difference... but that was with 4Gb on 4 cores.

Hello Sekerob,
well, if it does not make a difference, then I will just leave it as it is,
Thank you for your answer,

But: In both cases, SWAP memory and memory usage is too low, at 40 per cent memory usage and 20 per cent of SWAP memory usage.
Martin, you are confused about these indicators: the lowest, the best! The percentage for memory shows you how much memory is still available before needing to use the swap file. Because when a machine begins to need to use the swap file performance will drop dramatically.
Memory is permanently is at 37,9 per cent
This is what matters for performance and, clearly, everything is fine.
the usage of SWAP memory is permanently at 19,1 per cent.
This is probably code which was used when the task has been initialized and which is no longer used later on. What has been swapped there will not be cleared before the task ends, so there is nothing you can do, but that does not matter at all.

Regarding the settings in use, if/when you want to revert to website settings you have to clear these local settings completely using the Clear button at the top right corner of the Local Preferences window from the advanced view. The Preferences from the simple view is simply a subset of the same parameters visible in the advanced view,

Cheers. Jean.

Re: How to improve BOINCs usage of memory and SWAP Memory

Now I understand.
This is what happens if the line of WCG tasks just do not want to end.And you wait and wait........you start thinking about all possible and impossible ways to speed up.....

It was really good to hear, that at least the AIDS project has one promising result.

But I know that such masseges will not be to often. Research is a long lasting process.

I see you are from Normandy, France.

Nice place, I think.

But I am really worried about your nuclear plants in France.

Of course, it is your decision, a French decision, to use nuclear power.

But what about all the waste????

Maybe not the right place to discuss this, but I was in my mind and heart.

Cheers, Martin
