Hello !
I'm starting a new thread to maybe get some more information. I first inserted the following message in another thread: Hello ! I have a same option as ericinboston. I've got some i7 computers in use, but only one of them as Internet access. Is it possible with BOINCTasks to have the server download for the slaves ? I roamed around eFMer site, but was not able to find the answer. Thanks in advance. zP To which following answer was given: I think that it's not possible (maybe there is a way to do it... I don't know). If you use BOINCTasks or BOINCView (other very good tool option), in both cases the management could be made by one centralizer computer, but the downloads/uploads will be made by each machine (under your commands using the centralizer one, or each machine alone following your WCG profile web settings configurated). For you and for ericinBoston, I think that could be a plus read the follow thread, to get additional information about how to install the Boinc client in many machines at sametime: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28514 Good look ! ![]() I'd like to go on this topic in a brand new thread for I did not put away my idea of using these lone and unused computers on a shelf. So, if it is not possible to download WU via this manager, is it possible to run BOINC using a remote networked drive ? Or is there a way to configure an Internet connection for these machines ? Thanks in advance for any answer. zP |

If the computers is networked-together, so you can use BoincTasks, but only one of them is connected to internet, you can also get the others to connect to the internet.
----------------------------------------There's various ways to do this, if you're using windows there's likely atleast one method to share the network (depends on version), and if you example has a computer with 2 network-adapters you can "bridge" the connection. Another method is to use a Proxy, I used FreeProxy (a freely available proxy for windows) for some years with BOINC. Now, my recollection is a little fuzzy, but would expect this proxy also worked with WCG, but I can't guarantee it... If you're using a proxy, you basically installs a Proxy-"server" on the internet-connected computer, and configures which port(s) it will use. For the other computers, in BOINC Manager, hit... (hmm, doesn't have BOINC on this computer) advanced, setup? or something (AFAIK the 1st. choise under advanced-menu). This should open-up a dialogue with 3 or 4 tabs, one of them is to configure language, while another tab is to configure Proxy-settings. The info to use is the address or name of the computer you runs the proxy-server on, and whatever port you've configured to use. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Thanks for the answer Ingleside.
I'm running on XP/SP3, and I'm going to check how to use my dual network card host as a gateway to relay Internet access to the other hosts. |

This http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28530 may also offer an alternative.

If you can get a wired connection to all the machines, get a router and a switch or switches. connect all of the computers to the switch(es) and connect the switch(es) to the router. This is how most of my system is connected. I have a cheap router, less than $50, with 4 ports. I have 6 computers connected to a switch which is then plugged into the router. The six machines are all connected via a KVM switch to one monitor. Used switches and KVM switches can usually be found for less than $50. Good luck.

Or even a four port switch will do the job. When the internet connection is shared from one computer, it has to be always turned on to allow access to other computers. With a router or a switch, you'd not have this problem. Also, they are easier to configure than windows network sharing...
to infinity and beyond

Internet Connection Sharing is insanely easy. Here is Microsoft's do it yourself link.
----------------------------------------http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/netw...rt/crawford_02july01.mspx and this site has a picture to give you an idea of the setup that most would use. http://www.home-network-help.com/internet-connection-sharing.html Edit: It is pretty much the same for Win2k and XP. Windows 98/ME was a bit different, but a Google search can give you all you need for a how to on those. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Mar 13, 2010 6:17:59 AM] |
