Is there anyway to tell BOINC to store the downloaded data for WUs (and results I assume) on a different drive or directory instead of on the OS drive?
Twice now I have had to use system restore as a last resort to fix a problem I could find no other solution for and have lost WUs that were complete - because the restore point was before the completion time. |

Are you running Windows?
----------------------------------------If so, I'm presuming that you did a default installation and that you're moving everything to D:\. I've done what you're asking about by doing the following: 1. Stop the BOINC service by right-clicking on the BoincMgr system tray icon and select Exit. When prompted, check the "Stop running..." check box. 2. Move the BOINC folder from Windows 32bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES\ Windows 64bit: C:\PROGRAM FILES (x86)\ to D:\. 3. Create a new folder named Data in your D:\BOINC folder. 4. Move the contents of the old BOINC data folder from Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ to the new Data folder created in #3. 5. You can delete the old BOINC folder in #4. 6. Reinstall the BOINC client and point it at the new BOINC folder location. The program folder with be D:\BOINC and the data folder will be D:\BOINC\Data. These steps will preserve the existing work units and get the BOINC client off of your C: drive. If you're running Linux, you'll need to get someone else's input. |

Wait a minute!
----------------------------------------Steps 1 to 4 are OK, but if you have to restore your system you will also restore BOINC and its old data directory, which is not good. So I would say: 5. Restore your system 6. Stop BOINC (as in step 1) as soon as possible to make sure it does not communicate with the servers (if it is easy physically disconnect your network until you have finished steps 6 and 7) 7. Uninstall BOINC 8. Delete the old BOINC data directory on drive C: 9. Re-install BOINC in advanced mode and point it to your saved data directory on drive D: Step 2 can be ignored since you will make a fresh install. |
