I have a problem that is troubling me. My computer is currentley running only 50%-52% of its capacity. The Rosetta program is useing 48%-50%, with the rest being used by 'System Idle'; no other program is using the remaining 50%-48%. This double the time needed to process my work units. I am running Windows XP with an Intel Pentium 3 processor. Any solutions?

You have enabled hyperthreading function in BIOS... Disable it and it works for 100%.

How do I disable 'hyperthreading'?

Why bother disabling hyperthreading? There are many threads about hyperthreading. The main point is that Windows Task Manager does not know how to measure it. Therefore it says that there are 2 CPUs, only one of which is being used. This is just a software feature (bug) ignored by everyone. Hyperthreading is fine. It usually allows a CPU to do more by running a floating-point intensive program like Rosetta while also allowing an integer-only operating system task to work through the CPU pipeline as well.
My suggestion is to leave the BIOS alone. Disabling hyperthreading will slow down the computer even though Task Manager will suddenly report 100% cpu utilization. mycrofth |

Thanks for the response, mycroft.
After disabling the auto updates, I ran the program again. This time when I went back to my comuter I ran into the same problem I had before. Namely, the upload stalled because there was a Registration window/message from WCG prompting me to register. When I logged in as an existing member I was immediately credited with the points for the task as a new task immediately began executing. Any clues as to why this keeps happening? |

gmarcbentley1,
----------------------------------------I don't think it's hyperthreading - only Pentium 4 has HT... Have you tried running some CPU benchmarks and checking if it's running more than 50%? Regards, |

Please forgive me, but I am a relative novice when it comes to computers. What are 'CPU benchmarkes'?

A CPU benchmarker is a program that will run some standard processes and rate your processor against others tested with the same workload. One I have run and like is Fresh Diagnose which is available for free from the Fresh Devices web site at http://www.freshdevices.com/. |

You can also try Prime95 (available for example at: http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/be_cpu.html ) - run a torture test and check if your CPU is still running 50% (it should go 100%).
----------------------------------------SiSoft Sandra 2005 (Lite version is free and you can download it from: http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/ ) is also very useful for comparisons. In this case try running CPU arithmetic test. Good luck! |

The current HPF project does not make use of multiple processors or hyperthreading. The net is that on such systems, the CPU usage will indicate 50% when the grid agent is running.
