DDDT2 work units held hostage.. Day One... (smirk) Dr. Mike.. Any day now... ... at least one more became available today. The wingman on one of my DDDT2 WUs did not return a result, so another copy went out a couple of hours ago. - D |

Guess what????? It rained all day yesterday, it will rain all day today. Tomorrow chance of showers, then three days of showers. The rivers are full, the ponds are full, the lakes are full, and the reservoirs are full. The snow pack is near record levels in the high country. Now all the water is going into the delta and causing the sea level to rise. Looking back over my last 5 years of records, guess which month I usually get the most rain? ..... March. Enough!![]() And there's still water in the lake bed. I heard on the radio today that the drought is far from over with, too!

Hi team. Haven't been able to get in here today because I am rebuilding (software rebuild) this system. I am now running 64 bit Windows 7 on it. Wasn't able to upgrade because I had the pre-release version on it and you had to be on XP or Vista for upgrade, I tried to restore Vista and kept running into a brick wall there. Anyway, I am where I wanted to be as far as Windows goes. Other stuff is going slow. Found at least one piece of software that I need to upgrade to run on 64 bit system -- Dragon Naturally Speaking. I have it ordered. Other things just takeing forever. Did you install the professional or ultimate version? If so, you can run XP in a virtual machine (and it's free!). It probably wouldn't do any good for Dragon NS, but you will probably run into some other software that just won't like 64-bit windows.

COOL! Made Bronze on DDDT2!! 10 WUs was enough for that though the 11th validated just after it had been resent to a new wingman. Not good on resends is that they get 10 days (first time around is 14). One more left in PV. I wonder if I'll ever see any more DDDT2s though!

I guess the reporters will have to drown before they quit talking about the drought. Amazing. We have also had an unusually cold and wet winter but ...not like California. I think Dave would likely say the same about IL. |

The points subject is always going to be there. It's almost like they are a "necessary evil" to a degree. Looking at WCG as a "non-profit", points are our "currency". Like with other non-profits, we have plenty of folks who are committed to our cause and do what they do for that reason alone. We have others who are very points-centric. They will move from project to project based on which one gives the most points. It's a lot like folks who support a non-profit financially just to get a gold colored piece of sheet metal with their name on a chair. While that doesn't appeal to those committed because of the cause of that non-profit, the point is that the non-profit, and its cause, benefit from both. Then there are the plenty of folks in the middle. They see the cause as worthy but also enjoy to some degree the recognition given. An important part of the success of a non-profit is keeping its volunteers and supporters committed and motivated. If giving some sort of recognition for that support encourages the continuation of that support, the non-profit can be more effective in its cause as it benefits from a greater stability in its support. Yes, a non-profit can get "prolific" on the recognition and it almost becomes bribery just as some projects can go after the highly points-centric folks. Such is the "nature of the beast".
----------------------------------------WCG is our roots and I can't see any other project being our main focus. However, I also think that we need to keep in mind that we are, intentionally, a diverse team. We have folks committed to the cuase of WCG but also committed to maximizing the benefit they can give to the DC world with their machines. If utilizing the video card they have can benefit a worthy project is possible while that's not possible with WCG, they will. To the extent that they can do that with MOT instead of another team, then it seems to me prudent for us to afford them that opportunity with MOT. In terms of "visibility" at WCG, we are pretty much limited to our thread here. Communication with WCG members is basically all but impossible. We can recruit at WCG only to the extent we happen to already know someone. Beyond that, we have to depend on the visibility we have with this thread and just plain luck. Participating in other projects also allows the potential for gaining members there who can become interested in WCG and expand their crunch to here. People looking to join a team are most likely going to look for one that appeals to them for its particular focus and for its viability. Viability is how active the team is, is it growing or not. A growing team in the DC world will have its points growing and will maintain itself as one of the "prominent" teams. I don't believe in seeking points for points sake but feel that we should benefit from growing our points when that fits within our project criteria. Perhaps we could have a more narrow focus if we had a regular, steady flow of new members here at WCG. |
