Man I wish I could do this on WCG! 2/13 to 3/2 to pass 100,000 credits for FreeHAL (that's 700,000 in points) and that's with them running out of work some and not always getting a full 25 WUs each time! At least the crunching here has a lot more meaning!! It is pretty clear that points measured at WCG are not comparable to points or credits elsewhere. If the objective were to accumulate points or credits, one of the last places you would want to put your resources would be the WCG. If on the other hand the objective is to "do good" then one of the best places to put your resources is WCG. If you are so inclined, you can compare those WCG points to other's WCG points and have some fun. I told the checkout lady at the grocery store that I had millions of BOINC points. She looked at me as if I had multiple heads for a moment and again stated the cost for the groceries. I suspect that I would have gotten the same reaction had I told her that I had billions or even trillions of BOINC points. Translation: points are valueless and meaningless outside of a very constrained environment; in this case, the WCG. The contribution that we make here at the WCG with these work units are equally meaningless except to the researchers...We can only trust that we are helping to find cures and or solutions to mankinds severe problems. I know you knew all this Kieth..but some of the readers of this thread might not. ![]() I really hate bringing up points. It always seems to start some discussion and then we have to pretend that points don't matter. In reality, points don't matter much. In reality, crunching without seeing any progress matters even less. In reality (am I repeating myself?) there's nothing else to do but follow the points. I know that we may be accomplishing something, but we work on very (very) tiny pieces of a very large puzzle. The piece that we are working on may lead to a dead end, so all that crunching, heat, and electricity may be for nothing. But, we still get some kind of credit for what we accomplished. So, several years from now when they announce a cure and somehow give the crunchers on WCG credit for making that cure possible I will be very satisfied knowing that my computers contributed to the benefit of mankind. Until then, they have us hooked with points and pretty colored badges. Also, none of the other projects that I am running to try to get our team some points is taking any processing power away from WCG. Of course we are in this for the research. Our immediate reward is our points. Why do we have to be so afraid to mention anything about points? I never have understood that?

I'm not sure why points are that big of a deal to some. Sure, I like my points, and I like seeing some progress. Every once in awhile I lose sight of that fact.. sigh..

I do like seeing my rank get smaller and smaller on here.. :) Dr. Mike.. Good Morning MOT! I think most of us look at it the same way. It is hard for me to understand the importance of points. I suppose that if the WCG were to change the number of points it awards to 10x or 100x what they give today and at the same time revise all the historical points up by the same factor, then they would get more contributors. (and why not do that; points are free.) Perhaps they should; so that those who value points/credits beyond causes would crunch here rather than on some relatively frivolous projects because they give more points/credits. ![]() Perhaps it is because the other projects would subsequently do the same thing? As I said, I just don't understand it and it is pretty clear that I am not alone in that regard. ![]() Everyone have a great day! ![]() Your contribution here demonstrates your concern for humanity and your willingness to contribute to humanity without regard to reward or recognition. And that means you are good people. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Mar 3, 2010 3:35:08 PM] |

Guess what????? It rained all day yesterday, it will rain all day today. Tomorrow chance of showers, then three days of showers.
---------------------------------------- The rivers are full, the ponds are full, the lakes are full, and the reservoirs are full. The snow pack is near record levels in the high country. Now all the water is going into the delta and causing the sea level to rise. Looking back over my last 5 years of records, guess which month I usually get the most rain? ..... March. Enough!![]() ![]() |

Hi team. Haven't been able to get in here today because I am rebuilding (software rebuild) this system. I am now running 64 bit Windows 7 on it. Wasn't able to upgrade because I had the pre-release version on it and you had to be on XP or Vista for upgrade, I tried to restore Vista and kept running into a brick wall there. Anyway, I am where I wanted to be as far as Windows goes. Other stuff is going slow. Found at least one piece of software that I need to upgrade to run on 64 bit system -- Dragon Naturally Speaking. I have it ordered. Other things just takeing forever.
