Technology marches on. You can usually find pretty good information about these sorts of things at the usual tech sites. (I've posted a few URLs before).

GTX 470 & 480 are the next generation nVidia graphics cards. My take is that they are a bit underwhelming given the pre-release hype. There's also been some criticism that the air-cooled versions run excessively hot. There are water-cooled versions available. Prices are high, or at least they are now.

The i7 980x is 6 cores 12 threads and disproportionally expensive. You can get two lesser i7 processors (total 8 cores, 16 threads) for less and get much better total throughput. AMD also recently announced a 12 core processor. There will probably be a couple of 8 core processors announced in the next few months.

I don't know anything about the graphics cards but I second Darth's comments about the 980x (from what I have read). I would suggest that the 860 is still the price/performer today.

Dubby. So I wasn't sneaking huh old friend? Oh well. Summer will soon be here and I will have to cut back some sad

In other news: I bought one of those Intel Atom powered netbooks (CPU is Z520 @ 1.33Ghz with 1 Gig of Ram). It is a Dell Inspiron 1210. Just for grins, I put BOINC on it and surprise surprise it is running 2 HCC WUs at the moment and will finish them both in about 18 hours -- I guess it is hyper-threaded. Then it has two HFCC WUs to run. It sits there with no fan running and just cranks away and is not even warm except perhaps 5 degrees F over room temp. Of course I bought it as a travel machine and not a BOINC cruncher and was just horsing around when I put BOINC on it. smile
