Can CRISPR help edit out female mosquitoes? The recent discovery of the male-determining factor in mosquitoes, combined with the gene-editing capabilities of the CRISPR-Cas9 system, could be used to bias mosquito populations from deadly, blood-sucking females toward harmless, nectar-feeding males, thus helping to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/02/160217125535.htm ![]() THAT'S INTERESTING...but also, getting too much into Natural order of things! ![]() |

A smartphone-based diagnostic platform for rapid detection of Zika, chikungunya, and dengue viruses
Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed a smartphone-controlled, battery-operated diagnostic device that weighs under a pound, costs as little as $100 and can detect Zika, dengue, and chikungunya within 30 minutes. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/03/170320143823.htm ![]() |

Harnessing CRISPR for rapid detection of viral and bacterial infection
Researchers have created a version of CRISPR-Cas that can be used to diagnose infections, such as Zika and dengue with a high level of sensitivity. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170413141106.htm ![]() |

8 in 10 Indonesian children has been infected with dengue
Indonesia has one of the highest burdens of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne virus, in the world, and children account for many cases. Well over half of all children in urban areas are infected with dengue by the age of 5, and more than 80 percent have been infected with the virus at least once by the age of 10, researchers now report. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/06/170615142856.htm ![]() |

http://en.cubadebate.cu/news/2016/02/01/study...d-dengue-fever-cuba-1981/
----------------------------------------The US was also in the lead when it came to biological warfare – Cuba being the primary victim here. Cuban crops were targeted for contamination as were its sugar exports, the country’s lifeline. In the early 1970s the CIA introduced African swine flu into Cuba, deliberately targeting pork production, a staple of the Cuban diet. The nation’s entire pig population had to be put down. In 1981 a potent strain of dengue fever was planted into Cuba by the US. Almost 275,000 people were infected with the disease, causing 158 deaths, mostly children. US Olympians at 2016 Rio-Games were infected with West Nile Virus, not Zika
US Olympic and Paralympic athletes and staff who traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2016 Summer Games did not become infected with Zika virus but did test positive for other tropical mosquito-borne infections, including West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, and Chikungunya. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171007172948.htm ![]() |

New evidence that dengue antibodies trigger life-threatening infections
A finding from a large, long-term study of Nicaraguan children adds compelling evidence that antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) is real, occurring when people previously infected with dengue - and with the right level of dengue antibodies still in their blood - become infected again. https://tinyurl.com/y9cmzmpr ![]() |

Caution on new dengue vaccine: In some countries, harm outweighs benefit
A new analysis adds to concerns about the only vaccine available to protect against dengue, a nasty mosquito-spread disease colloquially called “breakbone fever” because of the painful achiness its sufferers endure. The study, published in the journal Science, suggests the vaccine should really only be used in places where there is a lot of dengue activity and where most children who receive it will have already had at least one bout of the disease. That’s because data from the studies used to approve the vaccine — called Dengvaxia, and produced by Sanofi Pasteur — showed a higher rate of hospitalizations for dengue three years after vaccination in young children who got the vaccine when compared to children who were unvaccinated. https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/01/dengue-vaccine-can-harm/ |
